Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a substantive consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to join our remarkable team.

The candidate will provide clinical commitments in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Interest and experience in Labour ward management is essential. There is a general gynaecology element to the post dependent on the skills of the successful candidate and in line with the department's requirements.

Applicants will ideally have an interest in Perinatal Mental Health.

The post is one of 17 Consultant posts. This is a replacement post arising from relocation of a consultant. Specifically, we wish to strengthen our specialist services in the areas of high-risk obstetrics and perinatal mental service. The successful applicant will work on both sites of the Trust providing emergency cover as well as on call cover.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will cover the acute obstetrics and gynaecology service and general obstetrics and gynaecology commitments including multidisciplinary peri mental health/ twin clinics across two sites and Caesarean section lists. We have a weekday hot week on call between 8-6 pm and the successful applicant will take part in this and an equal share of the 1:7-night time on call Rota.

The post holder will be expected to the lead consultant for phoenix continuity team and will the lead clinician for the guideline development in the directorate. Phoenix team is the new Continuity of Care team which cares for women who are 20 or under during their pregnancy, labour and postnatal period. Women's Directorate has a keen focus on developing and applying a 'living guidelines' approach to its maternity guidelines based on a systematic and continuous process of prioritisation and updating and the post holder will be leading on this aspect.

About us

The Trust consists of the Tunbridge Wells Hospital and Maidstone Hospital and serves a population of approximately 500,000 people, living in the West Kent and East Sussex areas. The Trust also manages the Kent Cancer Centre at Maidstone and Canterbury.

The Women's Directorate strives for excellence across the service, from our community care to our labour suite and birth centres. We work in collaboration with our local Maternity network, and Maternity Voices Partnership, we are developing our service to provide high quality care and excellence throughout the maternity journey.

Service provision for Obstetrics is based at the Tunbridge Wells hospital with Birth Centres adjacent to Maidstone Hospital and in Crowborough. We deliver approximately 5800 babies per annum across the three units. Gynaecology inpatients and most emergencies are treated at Tunbridge Wells Hospital. We also provide Ambulatory Gynaecology service at Maidstone hospital. Outpatient services are at both hospitals.

Job responsibilities

To contribute to daytime emergency obstetrics and gynaecology cover (hot weeks) 1 in 17 and contribute to 1 in 17 non-resident on-call obstetrics and gynaecology rota. It is expected that the candidate will be on site from 17:30 - 2100 and continue with the on-call duties off site. During bank holidays and weekends, the candidate will be on site for 12 hours between 08:30 - 21:00 and provide twice daily ward rounds, 7 days a week in compliance with Ockenden recommendations.

To assist the Consultant Obstetricians & Gynecologists and Consultant Midwives in the continuing update and training of all staff.

To provide antenatal, intra-partum and postnatal care within the department in close co-operation with colleagues and other specialties.

The post-holder will develop close collaborative links with Clinicians working in his/her area of specialist expertise and work to develop services to patients in these areas to the highest standard, according to departmental protocols and Trust guidance.

It is expected that the Appointee will participate in the undergraduate and postgraduate medical education of the Trust e.g. Tutorials; and pursue opportunity for research. They should actively participate in departmentalaudits.

The Appointee will be expected to participate and contribute to the Trusts Clinical Governance Program, to participate in Clinical Trials, R & D Programs etc. and to ensure that clinical practice is evidence based.

The Appointee must ensure that effective working relationships are fostered with those agencies concerned with the provision of health care services and those representing the service users interest.

The Appointee must ensure that the Directorate responds positively and efficiently to all complaints, addresses deficiencies in the standard of the Directorate services identified, implementing changes to remedy identified problem areas.
