Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Medical Microbiology for Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust (MTW). this is an exciting opportunity to work within a clinically led organisation that is one of the fastest improving Trusts within the country. The successful appointee will join an existing team of 3 other consultant Microbiologists to support the Microbiology laboratory and the infection Prevention and Control services in the Trust.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to contribute to contribute to the antimicrobial strategy of the Trust and will be a member of the Antimicrobial Stewardship group.

The post will rotate between Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells hospitals which will enable the post holder to have a clinical input into a wide range of specialist clinical services including the Kent Oncology Centre, clinical haematology, ophthalmology and specialist oncology surgery on the Maidstone site and major trauma, paediatrics and neonatal intensive care on the Tunbridge Wells site as well as general medicine and intensive care units on both sites. There are currently weekly MDTs with haemato-oncology, daily MDTs in both Intensive Care Units and pharmacy-microbiology handover meetings to support Antimicrobial Stewardship.

All Consultant Microbiologist are expected to attend the laboratory management meeting, departmental quality and clinical governance meeting and the Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee.

The post holder will contribute fully to these activities. A special interest to complement those of the existing consultants is desirable.

Provision, with consultant and other colleagues, and when necessary with the support of local Public Health England, of microbiological and epidemiological support, including surveillance, for Consultants in Communicable Disease Control, environmental Health Officers, DoH and others, and for clinical staff in hospitals and the community, within the catchment area of the Laboratory.
