Job summary

They will provide dynamic senior patient safety leadership, providing expert support to the organisation. With direct access to the executive team, the post holder will facilitate the early escalation of patient safety issues or concerns. They will also play a key role in the development of a patient safety culture, our safety systems and patient safety improvement activity.

You will work full time on patient safety, they will support the development of a patient safety culture and the Trusts safety systems, and have sufficient seniority to engage directly with our executive team. They will also work in networks to share good practice and to ensure we are learning from each other.

The post holder will participate in training to ensure they are fully trained in the national patient safety syllabus, ensuring that MTW is equipped with dedicated highly skilled patient safety professionals, helping to provide consistency across the organisation with the ICB and national best practice in our approach to patient safety.

As well as co-ordinating and supporting local patient safety priorities, the post holder will help with the implementation of the NHS patient safety strategy (PSIRF) and other national safety priorities. The specialist will have close links with the NHS England and NHS Improvements National Patient Safety Team who host a national network for Patient Safety Specialists, including regular meetings and information sharing through a dedicated online forum.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work closely with regional patient safety specialists to develop and further patient safety networks to offer peer-to-peer support and opportunities to share learning and good practice at a Trust and a system level.

Develop and deliver the local implementation of the following areas from the NHS patient safety strategy:

  • Just culture (to include effective monitoring and improvement systems)
  • Ensuring the Trust has effective systems for the planning and coordinating of actions required by National Patient Safety Alerts
  • Improving the quality of incident reporting
  • Supporting their organisation's transition from the National Reporting and Learning System (NRLS) and Strategic Executive Information System (StEIS) to the new Learn from patient safety events (LFPSE) service for recording patient safety events
  • Co-ordinating the local implementation of the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework, from Autumn 2023
  • Supporting the local implementation of the Framework for Involving Patients in Patient Safety
  • Responsible for devising and rolling out the Trust's training plan patient safety investigation plans and other patient safety related training requirements, i.e. safety culture and working collaboratively with the FTSU Guardian on other similar items.

Essential

  • Educated to MSc in patient safety / safety science or equivalent significant experience.
  • A strong commitment to continuing professional development

Desirable

  • PhD level study or equivalent relevant working experience in the same field
  • Professional Registration e.g. NMC, HCPC, etc.
  • Experience of the safety system "InPhase"
  • Risk management related qualification
  • Report Builder Trained "InPhase"

Experience & Knowledge

Essential

  • Comprehensive expert in patient safety investigations and safety science
  • Experience of facilitating change, including ability to motivate staff and change behaviours and attitudes
  • Expert working knowledge of the 2015 NHS Patient Safety Framework / 2023 Patient Safety Framework (PSIRF)
