Job summary
You will develop and maintain an evidence-based information and support service for Gynaecological and Colo-Rectal patients, supporting patients and their carers requiring radical and palliative Gynaecological and Colo-Rectal radiotherapy along their treatment pathway within the Kent Oncology Centre at the Maidstone site. It requires you to work closely with the Gynaecological and Colo- Rectal oncology team including the CNS's to support these patients through the radiotherapy pathway. You will have developed expertise to be able to function at the forefront of professional practice.
The role will primarily be as the key worker for patients undergoing Gynaecological and Colo-Rectal radiotherapy and the post holder will be involved in all stages of the patient pathway from initial consultation, consent, on treatment review and follow up.
You will facilitate a team on Gynaecological brachytherapy, ensuring all activities are performed according to trust and department policy. They will take the lead on Preparation and initiation of high dose rate irradiation, being responsible for removal of the radioactive source in the event of an emergency. To undertake Vault Gynaecological Brachytherapy insertions and removal of intracavity applicators.

Main duties of the job
- To provide specialist information about disease, treatment and side effects from the point of diagnosis for patients, relatives and carers' specifically for patients within the speciality.
- To provide support prior to and during treatment and be part of the follow up care for patients attending for radiotherapy.
- To attend multi-disciplinary team meetings to provide seamless care for radiotherapy patients and specifically for patients with Gynaecological and Colo-Rectal cancers.
- To attend new patient, review and follow-up Oncology clinics to enable patients to have adequate information to make an informed choice as to the treatment option they wish to pursue.
- To obtain informed consent in line with trust and departmental protocol.
- Provide appropriate referrals for social and economic needs, making applications for grants and benefits.
- To develop assessment tools for patient care and review and to provide ongoing support for patients and relatives after completion of treatment
- To provide patient 'On treatment review 'and follow up
- To provide radiographer lead service for Gynaecological and Colo-Rectal patients as identified by the lead Oncologist and professional lead for therapeutic Radiographers.
- To take the lead when initiating radiation treatment from a radioactive isotope.
- Able to lead and be responsible for removing a radioactive isotope from the patient in accordance with the emergency procedure in brachytherapy.
