Job summary

There is an exciting opportunity within our department of Haematology at Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells for Senior Biomedical Scientist (BMS). Applications are invited from suitably experienced, committed, highly motivated, quality driven, and enthusiastic individuals who will support the Head Biomedical Scientist mainly in the provision of high-quality haematology diagnostic service, and further developing the section to facilitate the Continuous Improvement activities across the department.

MTW has two hospitals, one in Pembury (on outskirts of Tunbridge Wells) and one in Maidstone, with good road and rail connections to London and the South-East Coast. We offer a £5000 welcome incentive for those relocating into the region. The successful applicant may be required to work at just one or both sites, as dictated by service needs. The department is ISO 15189:2012 and MHRA accredited, and has IBMS certification for portfolio training.

Main duties of the job

You should be FIBMS, HCPC-registered, with a minimum of 2 years post specialist portfolio experience, and can demonstrate an appropriate skill in haematology automation. You will be responsible for performing a wide range of duties including supervising/ managing running of routine haematology laboratory. The role will involve close collaboration with users of the service, and referral laboratories to manage tasks and help to evolve a risk-based development in the section. You will also have experience/knowledge of Quality Management Systems, standards (ISO15189) and the Clinical Laboratory accreditation process.

The department is well equipped with Beckman Coulter (flow cytometry), Sysmex (haematology), Werfen (coagulation), and Sebia (capillary electrophoresis) analysers. The department has implemented a fully compliant working time directive shift system. The successful candidate might be expected to participate in the shift system, if required for shift cover, once deemed competent.
