Job summary
Applications are invited for a Consultant Urological Surgeon post at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. This is an exciting new post to increase local service provision and improve patient waiting times particularly to support our urgent cancer diagnostics and first definitive treatment pathway.
The current Urology service is provided by seven consultants urological surgeons and provides comprehensive urological services for a population of approximately 650,000 in West Kent and East Sussex. The successful applicant will join a 1:8 on call rota with a consultant of the week model and 24 hour middle grade cover is well established.
This post has clinical sessions centred at Maidstone Hospital but with some activity at Tunbridge Wells Hospital in Pembury. Subspecialisation is well established within the department, and the new appointee will be expected to complement the sub speciality interests of the existing consultants, although some flexibility is possible in this aspect of job planning. Currently, radical cystectomy, prostatectomy and nephrectomy are carried out at the West Kent Urology Cancer Centre at the Medway Maritime Hospital, and although this post includes diagnostic work for cancer patients, and management of superficial bladder cancer, the new appointee would not necessarily be expected to perform radical cancer surgery.
Main duties of the job
This is a new post to help meet waiting list targets and complement the existing subspecialty expertise in the department, and partly to replace and develop roles from a retiring colleague.
To participate actively in departmental audits, sharing co-ordination of audit activities within the department and implementation of change.
To take an active responsibility for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training and supervision.
To assume responsibility, both personally and corporately with consultant colleagues, for the management of junior medical staff. You are expected to be involved in their professional development, both clinical and personal as per guidance from the Deanery.
To ensure that all doctors in training for whom you have supervisory responsibilities undertake delegated clinical tasks that are within their level of competence and knowledge.
To ensure at all times that you comply with the General Medical Council's published guide "Good Medical Practice" including the Duties of a Doctor.
