Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for the role of General Manager for Pathology. This is a hands-on, operational role to drive improvement and deliver national and local targets for urgent and emergency care. This role will work closely with the Clinical Director and Head of Service for Pathology to deliver the departments operational and strategic agenda and includes the management of the Pathology administrative operational team.

This opportunity will suit strong, performance driven and proactive leaders from an operational background who enjoy working autonomously in a fast-paced and changeable environment. You will have experience of budgetary management, staff management and be able to meet the peaks and troughs of service demand.

Main duties of the job

The General Manager, along with the Clinical Director and Head of Service is accountable for the delivery of the Directorates objectives by providing the leadership, drive and direction to ensure delivery. The post holder will develop, deliver, monitor and improve services within the Directorate, meeting all national and local targets and delivering best quality patient care and experience within financial control, resources and targets.

Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust is a large acute hospital Trust in the county of Kent.

The Trust provides a full range of general hospital services and some areas of specialist complex care to around 500,000 people living in the south part of West Kent and the north part of East Sussex.

The Trusts core catchment areas are Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells and their surrounding boroughs. We work from two main clinical sites: Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury. Tunbridge Wells Hospital opened in 2011 and provides single rooms with en-suites for all in-patients the first of its kind in the country.

We employ over 6,500 full and part-time staff in a huge range of clinical and non-clinical roles across both of our hospital sites.

  • Educated to degree level in business/marketing discipline or relevant experience
  • Evidence of further personal development
  • Post Graduate Management qualification or equivalent high quality training/experience (Master's Level)

Desirable

  • Clinical qualifications relevant to the Directorate
  • NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement tools and techniques in waiting list, demand and capacity management
  • Formal project management qualification

Experience

Essential

  • At least 5 years of managerial experience with a proven track record of success in business case development.
  • Experience in public healthcare.

Desirable

  • Experience of producing and implementing successful business cases
  • Track record of successful service improvements and changes
  • Some NHS or local government experience.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Understanding of how organisations achieve prime performance
  • Knowledge of health service management, including change management and workforce planning.
