Job summary

Maidstone Hospital, situated in the heart of the Kent countryside, covers a large population and includes the regional Oncology centre.The Histology department provides services for Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trusts, Medway NHS Foundation Trust and Dartford & Gravesham NHS Trust. Consequently there is a combined Histology workload of around 70,000 cases per year. The department carries out a wide range of investigations including various specialist resections from hospitals within the Kent & Medway Pathology network. It also includes an expanding immunocytochemistry section that has an annual through-put of approximately 50,000 tests.

Main duties of the job

You will undertake laboratory procedures in support of the diagnostic Histopathology service.

The department is computerised and well equipped. Career development and participation in CPD are actively encouraged.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced individuals for the full-time post of Histology Medical laboratory Assistant. This post would suit an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual with good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.

The Trusts core catchment areas are Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells and their surrounding boroughs. We work from two main clinical sites: Maidstone Hospital and Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury. Tunbridge Wells Hospital opened in 2011 and provides single rooms with en-suites for all in-patients the first of its kind in the country.

Qualifications

Essential

  • A levels or equivalent
  • Evidence of numeracy and literacy (e.g. standard pass or higher for GCSEs in mathematics and English Language).

Desirable

  • NVQ level 2 Clinical Laboratory Support
  • GCSE in Biology or Chemistry (standard pass or above i.e. 4-9 or A-C)

Experience/ Knowledge

Essential

  • Experience of skilled manual activity or work
  • Basic understanding of role of Histology as a science
  • Basic understanding of laboratory health and safety requirements
  • An understanding of the need for confidentiality

Desirable

  • Experience working in a laboratory (especially histology)
  • Experience working with databases (i.e.evidence of keyboard skills)

  • Good level of manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination (essential)
  • Good verbal and written communications skills
