Job summary

As a result of additional investment in the expanding haematology department the haematology team are excited to be able to offer the opportunity for a motivated and expert pharmacist to join our team.

As a consultant pharmacist the post holder will, as the pharmacy expert within haematology provide a dynamic link between clinical practice and service development by creating new models for delivering patient care ensuring the best experience and outcomes for patients from their medicines regardless of setting of care.

University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) already has a number of consultant pharmacist posts and the post holder will also have the support of our established pharmacy advanced practice network locally.

Please note we are also willing to consider candidates who don't meet all the essential criteria as a progression against agreed milestones will be considered on an Annex 21 of Agenda for Change Basis.

This post is in development for submission to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society for accreditation as a Consultant Pharmacist post

Main duties of the job

The key responsibilities of the post holder will be to manage, strategically lead and co-ordinate the pharmacy team in the provision of a safe, effective and efficient clinical pharmacy service to haematology, in accordance with local and national standards and strategy.

Clinical Leadership

  • To maintain a clinical expertise and develop particular areas of interest as appropriate and relevant to the role and in accordance with the Organisation and Pharmacy strategy
  • To provide strategic clinical leadership for haematology be recognised as a local area, national and/or international expert within the speciality.
  • To demonstrate expert clinical knowledge, accepting case referrals for medicines optimisation within haematology, managing and making referrals to other members in the multidisciplinary team.

Service Organisation and Management

  • To manage the team within the Specialist Area in accordance with Organisation policy and procedures, for example, pharmacy rotas including cover for sickness, vacancies and leave and performance management.
  • To deputise for the manager at high level meetings in the absence of or at the request of the manager or lead to whom Consultant pharmacist is accountable.
  • To represent pharmacy at organisational level meetings as required by manager or lead to whom Consultant pharmacist is accountable.

Audit, Research, and Service Development

  • To develop and implement pharmacist led clinics within haematology and to continue to develop them through evaluation to ensure patients and service needs are being met.
  • To lead on the development and critical review of Trust and pharmacy policies relating to medicines use and medicines optimisation in haematology in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team within the Trust and across the system. To provide expert pharmaceutical input into Trust policies pertaining to medicines and clinical pharmacy services.
  • To identify changes in prescribing practices and ensure and monitor the safe, efficient and economic use of medicines within haematology, in accordance with national and local guidelines, working with appropriate colleague

Education, Training, and Professional Development

  • To tutor clinical pharmacists undertaking postgraduate qualifications and to tutor other pharmacists, trainee pharmacists and pharmacy students in haematology as required.
  • To maintain a portfolio of practice, regularly submitting portfolio to To support colleagues in developing evidence for RPS faculty submission within Specialist Area and encourage faculty submission.
  • To act as a Designated Prescribing Practitioner (DPP), supervising and taking responsibility for supporting trainee pharmacist independent prescribers with the experiential component of the prescribing course.

Budget and Financial management

  • To use available information to influence prescribers and ensure the most cost-effective choice of therapy.
  • To provide advice/support to clinicians on completing funding requests for patients by providing medicines information and evidence to support any Individual Funding Requests.
  • To be accountable for the production and implementation of business plans, and to contribute to business case development in both the Clinical Support and Imaging (CSI) clinical management group and haematology.
