Job summary

The purpose of this post is to offer comprehensive training in advanced cardiac electrophysiology for suitably qualified candidates who wish to become a specialist electrophysiologist.

The post is based within the Department of Cardiology at Glenfield Hospital and is intended to provide comprehensive training in invasive and non-invasive arrhythmia management for individuals intending to pursue a career as a cardiac electrophysiologist. Applicants are expected to have had substantial training in general cardiology and be in possession of an NTN or equivalent. In addition, applicants are expected to have a sound base of experience in device therapy for brady and tachycardia treatments. In addition basic experience in diagnostic electrophysiology is required and a clear interest and motivation to develop high-level electrophysiology and ablation skills/experience. Successful candidates will also be encouraged to participate in research activities of the department during their fellowship, as there is good access of established academic support and expertise.

The fellow will be expected to participate in a maximum of 2 outpatient clinics / week within the electrophysiology service and attendance at a minimum of 3 electrophysiology lists a week is anticipated where training will be given in diagnostic electrophysiology and radiofrequency ablation, including complex (AF and VT) ablations, with the wide range of technologies available.

Main duties of the job

Applications are invited to join the University of Leicester as a Senior Clinical Cardiology Fellow in Cardiac Electrophysiology, based at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. A one year post is available which would be suitable for trainees who already hold a National Training Number (or equivalent) and have already completed core cardiology training (at least 3 years of general cardiology). The Post is available to sub-specialise in cardiac electrophysiology. It may be undertaken by trainees who are already in a training post (as part of an 'out of programme experience'). Candidates who have attained or will attain their CCST during the fellowship will also be considered.

The post is based at the Glenfield Hospital. Glenfield is one the largest and most modern tertiary cardiac centres in the UK and has recently undergone a £17million expansion to improve CHD services. There are four cardiac theatres, six catheter laboratories (2 EP, 3 coronary, 1 pacing), state of the art non-invasive imaging facilities including dedicated cardiac CT and MRI scanners, 3D and intra-cardiac echocardiography. There are three cardiology wards, a 10 bedded CCU with 12 step-down beds, a cardiovascular ward, two cardiac surgical wards, cardiac ITU and 4 bed cardiac high dependency unit. In 2016, the unit performed, >10,000 trans-thoracic echoes, >1100 peri-operative TOE, >1000 TOE, and ~600 stress echo. For EP for 2018 we carried out ~1,000 EP/RFA procedures (>300 AF ablations).

Job responsibilities

It is anticipated that the fellow will work under the direct supervision of consultant cardiac electrophysiologists in the department (Professor Andre Ng, Dr Riyaz Somani, Dr Alistair Sandilands, Dr Merz Lazdam, Dr Shui Hao Chin and Dr Mokhtar Ibrahim) for the duration of the appointment in order to get broad exposure to variety of EP interventions as well as comprehensive management of patients with arrhythmic conditions in out-patient and in-patient settings. The majority of the week will be spent in the lab undertaking procedures. There will be no regular ward commitment, but participation in the Advice & Guidance, EP consultation and AF Virtual ward is expected and the management of inpatients with complex arrhythmias. The fellow will be expect to do 1- 2 out-patient clinics per week. The opportunity to join the registrar on-call rota may be available, but is not mandatory. There is ample opportunity to participate in the management of arrhythmia patients at device clinics and whilst this is not the focus of the fellowship, access is available to advanced device implantation activities.

On-call / Emergency Duty Rota

The applicant will be expected to attend regular educational and MDT meetings where the management of patients with arrhythmias and devices are discussed.

Attendance is also expected at the bi-monthly afternoon audit meeting. Opportunities to participate in lectures and tutorials for other medical and non-medical groups will be available. The applicant will participate in the general training and supervision of the SHOs and other junior medical staff in cardiology and in the teaching of medical students and physiological measurements technicians.
