Job summary

Do you have a keen eye for detail and a keen interest in Medicines Safety?

We are looking for a motivated and dynamic Pharmacy Technician to join our Medicines Safety Team. The role involves working with a team of Pharmacists, Lead Pharmacy Technician and Nurses to support the medicines safety agenda within University of Hospitals Leicester (UHL) NHS Trust.

You will be involved in clinical and non-clinical audit work, compiling medicines safety reports to relevant parties, delivering medicines management training to groups of learners/ newly qualified staff, be a link between pharmacy and nursing staff to improve medicines management standards, be actively involved in quality improvement projects, disseminating information, minute-taking, as well as usual dispensary duties as and when required.

Main duties of the job

Audit Coordination:Assist in coordinating an annual programme of medicines management audits, ensuring compliance with local and national standards. Complete audit proposals, log them with relevant committees, and adhere to timelines.

Data Analysis & Reporting:Analyse audit data, prepare dashboards, and create reports to communicate findings. Share results and recommend actions to improve medicines management and patient safety.

Medicines Safety:Conduct risk assessments, update risk registers, and review SOPs or policies based on audit findings. Work with clinical areas to address concerns and improve standards.

Communication & Training:Communicate key audit messages through posters, bulletins, and presentations. Participate in training sessions for multidisciplinary staff.

Controlled Drugs & Compliance:Audit controlled drugs and storage areas bi-annually and annually. Monitor usage and incident data, escalating concerns to the CD Accountable Officer (CDAO) as needed.

Quality Improvement:Assist in analysing and presenting data for Quality Improvement projects. Monitor and update action plans to meet project goals.

Supervision:Supervise trainees involved in medicines safety and management audits.

Dispensing & Patient Care:Dispense and check prescriptions, and counsel patients on their medications as part of routine duties.

  • To assist in the co-ordination of an annual programme of medicines management audits in response to the local quality schedule, quality commitment and national drivers.
  • To ensure a clinical audit proposal form is completed for all audits including time scales and logged with the Pharmacy Audit and Reasearch Committee (PARC) in the first instance.
  • To be an active staff member in auditing all dispensaries and satellite Pharmacy areas CDs bi-annually and storage annually. To assist the lead Pharmacy Technician in collating data, sharing results via a written report and recommending actions based on audit findings.
  • Be involved in analysing complex data, preparing dashboards, spreadsheets and reports based on results in a format that staff can easily visualise.
  • Communicate key messages from audits and incidents in a variety of formats, including posters, bulletins, oral presentations, etc. to improve patient safety.
  • To risk assess processes resulting from poor audit results, working with the medicines management team, and updating the risk register as required and reviewing SOPs, guidelines or policy if relevant.
  • To work with clinical areas of concern in improving standards of medicines management within their area.
  • To participate in looking at usage and incident data in order to monitor controlled drug activity highlighting issues of high usage, escalating concerns to the CD Accountable Officer (CDAO).
  • To be a medicines safety link within one or more CMGs as required.
  • To be involved in training sessions for multi-disciplinary of staff including Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians, Nursing and Midwifery Preceptorships, Nursing Associates, etc.
  • To co-ordinate the audit of the Leicestershire Medicines Code (LMC) and controlled drugs within UHL ensuring that these are completed in a timely manner and communicated with CMGs; results and action plans as required.
