Job summary

Applications are invited for a clinical research fellow post, which offers an opportunity to undertake high quality translational clinical research in cardiac electrophysiology and devices linked primarily to AF ablation. The main project will assess the efficacy and effectiveness of high-power, short-duration approach in radiofrequency ablation of atrial fibrillation (AF). The post will also include other AF research projects.

This is a 12 month fixed term post with the potential for an extension for a further 12 months.

It is anticipated that the fellow will work under the direct supervision of consultant cardiac electrophysiologists in the department with direct supervision of Dr Hao Chin.

The applicant will be encouraged to develop towards an MD/PhD thesis. In addition, the post-holder will gain experience in the management of patients with complex arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation and cardiac devices.

Main duties of the job

The post is based within the Department of Cardiology at Glenfield Hospital and is intended to provide comprehensive training in invasive and non-invasive arrhythmia management for individuals intending to pursue a career as a cardiac electrophysiologist. Applicants are expected to have had substantial training in general cardiology and be in possession of an NTN or equivalent. In addition, applicants are expected to have a sound base of experience in device therapy for brady and tachycardia treatments. In addition basic experience in diagnostic electrophysiology is required and a clear interest and motivation to develop high-level electrophysiology and/or devices skills/experience. Successful candidates will also be encouraged to participate in research activities of the department during their fellowship, as there is good access of established academic support and expertise.

The fellow will be expected to participate in 1- 2 outpatient clinics / week within the electrophysiology service and attendance at 2-3 electrophysiology or devices lists a week is anticipated where training will be given in cardiac devices and EP with focus on AF ablations

It is expected that the successful applicant will be exposed to some to EP interventions as well as comprehensive management of patients with arrhythmic conditions in out-patient and in-patient settings. The majority of the week will be spent in research activity. There will be no regular ward commitment. The fellow will be expect to do 1- 2 out-patient clinics per week. The opportunity to join the registrar on-call rota may be available, but is not mandatory. There is ample opportunity to participate in the management of arrhythmia patients at device clinics and whilst this is not the focus of the fellowship, access is available to invasive electrophysiology activities.

There is no mandatory commitment to the out of hours SpR rota, but there may be an opportunity to do this should a rota slot become available.

Teaching.

The applicant will be expected to attend regular educational and MDT meetings where the management of patients with arrhythmias and devices are discussed.

Attendance is also expected at the bi-monthly afternoon audit meeting. Opportunities to participate in lectures and tutorials for other medical and non-medical groups will be available. The applicant will participate in the general training and supervision of the SHOs and other junior medical staff in cardiology and in the teaching of medical students and physiological measurements technicians.
