Job summary

Applications are invited for a whole-time or part time Consultants in General Anaesthesia. ( 2 Positions)

The Anaesthetic department at the Glenfield hospital provides support for Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cardiology, Respiratory Medicine, Vascular surgery, Breast, HPB surgery, major Urology, Renal Transplant services, Nephrology and non-theatre activities such as Imaging, ECT, Community Dentals, sedation lists for ERCP, Bronchoscopies etc. There are numerous opportunities for Peri-operative medicine as the Trust is embarking on a major POA (Pre-operative Assessment) project with plans for a major expansion in high risk and MDT clinics to support the surgical services. This post will provide some cross-site support to the Leicester General Hospital for Gynaecological surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology and Robotic surgeries.

There is continued support for non-clinical professional activities both inside and outside the trust.

UHL is fully committed to continuing medical education for consultants. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to departmental quality improvement activity and the clinical supervision of postgraduate trainees in Anaesthesia. The department is well supported for curriculum delivery and the holistic development of trainees with a well-established leadership structure in education and training, including support for trainee leadership development.

Main duties of the job

Responsibility for the provision of a safe and efficient anaesthetic service for elective and emergency care at UHL including maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.

To work flexibly with colleagues and theatre team to ensure smooth running of theatre lists.

To support the Consultant-delivered Perioperative Medicine Service and high risk anaesthetic clinics

Provide on-call rota cover for the High Dependency Unit and emergency theatre at LGH.

To promote new ways of working and providing anaesthetic care for patients in the peripheral hospitals and East Midlands Planned Care Centre (EMPCC)

Take part in multidisciplinary case discussions.

Supervise and train junior medical staff

To be involved in appraising and assessing juniors.

Teaching, research and administration.

To proactively develop the service.

To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.

To provide specialist high-risk anaesthesia outpatient clinic work

To participate in the General Duties Consultant Anaesthetist non-resident on-call rota and/or weekend resident rota.

To support the Consultant-delivered Perioperative Medicine Service

To work flexibly to support the workload and cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences. Flexibility within the role will be required as we reconfigure, working towards a single-site UHL maternity service

To participate in service development and business planning in collaboration with the other Consultants in the department, the CMG and local GPs and commissioners within the local CCGs.

Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff including the observance of local employment and human resource policies and procedures

To contribute to and/or support research. Formal research duties taken up after commencement in post may be assessed for additional SPA time.

Participating in medical audit, the Trusts Clinical Governance processes and in CPD

CPD is provided in job plans and attendance at audit and other governance meetings is mandatory; Managerial, including budgetary responsibilities where appropriate and compliance with standing orders and standing financial instructions of the Trust.

In line with GMC Good Medical Practice it is the responsibility of the post-holder to ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality initiatives within the area of work.

The post-holder is expected to participate in professional continuing medical education; study leave is provided for this purpose.

The post-holder will be expected to undertake the Trust Corporate and Directorate specific Induction and competency Programmes appropriate to role.
