Job summary
Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow in Lung Cancer and Interventional Pulmonology in the department of Respiratory Medicine at Glenfield Hospital, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. The post is available for 12 months with anticipated start date from February 2025. The successful applicant will join an established team of lung cancer physicians serving a population of over 1.2 million. The Lung Cancer Services are responsible for the care of patients with suspected thoracic malignancy, assessing over 1500 new patients annually. It is a regional tertiary referral centre for lung cancer diagnostics and staging, mesothelioma, thoracic surgery and state of the art oncology services. We are one of 16 centres nationally that offer stereotactic radiotherapy to lung cancers and oligometastatic disease. SACT is extremely well established with opportunities for involvement in lung cancer research. Our lung cancer pathway includes three lung cancer clinics per week, pre-clinic diagnostic MDT's, up-front CT scanning with recent introduction of direct CXR to CT service and facilities for same day ultrasound guided FNA of neck nodes and ultrasound guided pleural fluid aspiration. There are well established links with hospital based palliative care teams.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will have responsibility for delivering the lung cancer service and will involve designated lung cancer clinics and interventional bronchoscopy sessions with at least one endobroncial ultrasound session per week. There will be opportunities to learn medical thoracoscopy, rigid bronchoscopy and endobronchial cryobiopsies. The post holder will have particular responsibility for the day-to-day running of the lung cancer triage meetings as part of Leicester Optimal Lung Cancer Pathway ensuring appropriate communication with primary care, oncologists, thoracic surgeons, interventional radiologists, palliative care teams and lung cancer specialist nurses. The post holder will provide support and guidance for lung cancer specialist nurses and next step co-ordinators. You will also participate in and coordinate weekly MDT for patients with thoracic malignancy. In-patient responsibilities will include the assessment of internal lung cancer referrals and the day-to-day care of respiratory medicine inpatients in the ward with lung cancer, pleural and interventional theme, as deemed necessary.
