Job summary

The Department of Breast surgery is one the largest in England with approximately 1000 new cancers diagnosed each year. All screening detected cancers from the Leicester Screening Unit are managed in house with 15% increase following the age extension implemented in December 2012. The department is centralized at Glenfield Hospital, with the Leicester Breast Screening Unit, and the majority of the outpatient activity takes place in a purpose built Breast Care Centre.

Presently the University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) performs over 1000 operations for Breast Cancer each year. The full range of routine Breast Oncoplastic and Reconstructive surgery is performed in UHL. Nipple/ Areolar tattooing is available as well as vacuum assisted core biopsy, Breast MRI, Tomosynthesis & Contrast Enhanced Mammography. Sentinel lymph node biopsy is fully implemented as per UK-BASO guidelines. The post holder will be a core member of the Breast Cancer MDT. We are an active and expanding reconstructive unit with close links with the Plastic Surgery department at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, who provide free flap reconstruction facility as well as immediate and delayed option. There is also a dedicated breast ward with experienced nursing staff. There is a compliment of junior medical staff and specialty trainees.

Main duties of the job

The appointment will be whole time. Any Consultant who is unable for personal reasons, to work whole time, will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with Consultant colleagues and CMG Managers.

The post holder will be 1 of 7 full time Consultant Breast Surgeons, and 1 Associate Professor offering Specialist Breast surgery in UHL, including Breast Reconstruction, based at the Glenfield Hospital.

This post involves flexible working including evenings and weekends where needed, with appropriate notice given. This will be discussed at interview with further details.
