Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for an advanced healthcare assistant to join our ophthalmic practitioner team at the University Hospitals of Leicester Ophthalmology department.

We are looking for someone with experience of being a healthcare assistant or similar role to work as part of our team in the medical retina sub specialty of Ophthalmology, provide clinical and non-clinical support to the multi-professional team under the direction of an Ophthalmic Practitioner (Nurse and ODP).

The role will involve flexible working but is a great career opportunity, offering in role training and competency training objectives. You will be joining a team who work at the Leicester Royal infirmary, Elective care Hub Leicester General Hospital in outpatients, theatres, clean rooms and community GP practices across Leicester and Leicestershire. Someone with access to a Vehicle is desirable but transport will be provided if off site working is required.

You may be required to work in other designated locations of the Trust as well as your primary base. In particular, flexibility is required across the three main hospital sites (Leicester Royal Infirmary, Leicester General Hospital and Glenfield Hospital). If you're initial location is one of these sites excess travel reimbursement would not apply for a permanent or temporary change of base

Main duties of the job

The role will involve full training that includes:

  • Bloods and Cannulation
  • Visual acuity
  • Aseptic technique training and theatre pack opening
  • Administration of eye medications such as eye drops
  • Basic Medical Retina training
  • Patient observation training
  • Basic OCT Photography training
  • Visual fields photography
  • Eye care training for measure of intraocular pressure

To Undertake specified and unsupervised aspects of care and therapeutic intervention as delegated by the Registered Health Care Professional within an agreed protocol, sphere of responsibility and after completing appropriate competency based training agreed by the Trust and Ophthalmology department.

An informal visit is extremely recommended to appreciate the needs of the service and the role.
