Consultant in Acute and General Medicine

This is an exciting time in acute medicine in Leicester. We are looking to appoint one Consultant in Acute Medicine to support further expansion in provision of Acute Medical Care within the trust. The successful candidate will join the existing Acute Medicine Consultant team in helping to deliver Acute Medicine Services.

The Acute Medical Department currently covers several areas including a 76 bedded Acute Medical Unit which incorporates a higher level receiving area referred to as the Acute Care Bay; along with a separate Ambulatory Area.

The Acute Medicine Department aims to sustain its position at the forefront of advances in Acute Medicine. It is developing ambulatory care and triage services to prevent admissions and to offer new options to GPs seeking advice for acutely unwell patients. It is also further embedding its in-reach service to the Emergency Department to facilitate rapid assessment and appropriate management of medical patients presenting via the Emergency Department.

A bespoke Acute Medicine floor - known as the Emergency Floor - opened in June 2018, which includes a purpose built Acute Medical Unit co-located with the Emergency Department and Emergency Radiology. It also includes a dedicated Higher Dependency Area, Ambulatory Area and Acute Frailty Unit.

(pending royal college approval)

Main duties of the job

  • To provide senior clinical decision making in the Acute Medical Unit and the Ambulatory Area (referred to as GPAU). To participate in the acute general medical take at the LRI contributing to a shared weekday and weekend commitment to the Acute Medical Unit.
  • To help develop ambulatory emergency care.
  • To liaise and work with the Emergency Department to provide a seamless acute medical service to patients by supervising ED in-reach on selected mornings.
  • To enhance links with the Emergency Department.
  • Supervise and train junior medical staff.
  • To develop acute medicine for the benefit of patients along with the other Consultants at UHL, and our external commissioners and provider partners
  • To ensure the provision of good standards of practice and care as described in the GMC Guidance 'Duties of a Doctor' are followed at all times; and that bad practice is reported.
  • To ensure that clinical practice is both effective and efficient and that appropriate monitoring of clinical care takes place. To actively participate in audit.
  • To work with the CMG management team to ensure that services are delivered efficiently and reflect best practice with processes and governance to match - this may require new and flexible ways of working in the future.

About us

Our new strategy, 'Leading in healthcare, trusted in communities' was developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners and is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:

  • high-quality care for all,
  • being a great place to work,
  • partnerships for impact, and
  • research and education excellence

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:

  • we are compassionate,
  • we are proud,
  • we are inclusive, and
  • we are one team

This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.
