Job summary

This post involves recruiting, training and supporting a team of volunteers to assist patients on the wards through providing drinks, meal assistance, and completing various activities.

The post holder will work with volunteers in the Leicester Royal Infirmary, Glenfield and General hospital; Monday -Thursday, working 2 days 8am-4pm and 2 days 11am-7pm and be part of the Volunteer Service Team

Main duties of the job

To support and manage a team of volunteers in supporting patients in a number of different ways within wards across the Trust focusing on individual patient needs and the safety and wellbeing of patients and volunteers.

To provide basic training and support for volunteers in delivering safe and appropriate support with the Falls Prevention activities programme, nutrition and hydration support and signposting to organisations and services providing support on discharge home.

To work with staff in all relevant areas to maximise the potential of all volunteers in the provision of support services for patients.

This post will include multi ward working and will be based in the Volunteer Services Team.

  • Ensure that appropriate volunteer support is available to meet the needs of patients on the wards
  • Ensure that staff are aware and feel confident in utilising the skills of volunteers to support patients on their ward ensuring good communication with nursing staff to ensure any risks are identified
  • Ensure that volunteers receive appropriate training in all aspects of their role
  • Ensure that volunteers involvement in patient support and information relating to that patient is clearly documented and made available to relevant members of the multidisciplinary team
  • Ensure that support and interaction is provided in a culturally sensitive manner
  • Ensure that allocated equipment and materials are correctly stored, maintained and cleaned in line with infection prevention and health and safety procedures
  • Ensure that supervision process is used to reflect and review practice.
  • Ensure that duties are not undertaken if they are not appropriate for the volunteer
