Job summary

This is a busy, challenging and rewarding role leading the ongoing development of ACCOTS, the Adult Critical Care Co-ordination and Transfer Service across the Midlands region.

The post holds management responsibility for this regional service. The post holder will work closely with the ACCOTS Leadership Team (Lead Practitioners and Lead and Deputy Lead Consultants) to ensure the delivery of high-quality clinical services and the achievement of strategic and operational objectives, service improvement and performance targets.

Main duties of the job

As a member of the Leadership Team, the post holder will contribute fully to the overall management and development of the ACCOTS service. There is a strong strategic element to the role, with leadership of service development and business plans for the continuation of the service and frequent interactions with commissioners and external agencies being an important part of the role.

As well as the strategic element, operational management is an essential part of the role. This post holder will participate in the operational oversight meetings to drive the development of this service alongside the wider leadership team and will be expected to have a presence at both ACCOTS clinical bases in addition to remote working as required.

About us

ACCOTS is the commissioned Adult Critical Care Transfer Service for the Midlands region providing coordination, triage, decision-support and transfer of critically ill patients between hospitals for escalation to specialist care, continuation of care, repatriation and capacity reasons. It is primarily focused on intra region transfers but must be capable of delivering inter regional transfers and have the ability to surge capacity when the Adult Critical Care (ACC) service is under pressure.

ACCOTS is hosted by two acute trusts (University Hospitals Leicester NHS Trust and University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust) but runs as one region wide service, led and managed by its Leadership Team. ACCOTS has two operational bases, Castle Donington in the East Midlands and Union Park in the West Midlands. Although this appointment is via UHL, the post-holder will be expected to work collaboratively with both host trusts to ensure ACCOTS is delivered as a region wide service, with a singular approach to all aspects of operational and strategic delivery as defined by the ACCOTS Leadership Team and ratified by the ACCOTS Partnership Board. The overarching governance structure into which ACCOTS reports is it's partnership board, where both host trusts, the critical care networks and NHSE are represented.
