Job summary

The department are aiming to appoint to this post in September 2024.

Biomedical Scientists form the main part of the workforce of pathology laboratory services. They are responsible for testing samples from patients to support doctors and healthcare professionals in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust has pathology laboratories at all three of our hospitals. Most of our specialist laboratory services are based at Leicester Royal Infirmary

As an apprentice you will

  • Learn how to perform laboratory analyses associated with the post, including maintaining appropriate records and documentation.
  • Undertake quality control procedures and examine quality control results to identify poor performance.

What you will receive

  • NO tuition fees to pay at the end of your course and get paid while studying
  • Salary starting at £198 per week for the first year and increasing over the four years of study.

Future prospects

After graduating and completion of a state registration portfolio (included and expected within the four years) the apprentice will be eligible to apply for positions as a state registered biomedical scientist (Agenda for Change band 5) and be ready to begin their IBMS Specialist portfolio.

Entry requirements

A-levels x3 - BBB, including Biology; or BTEC Extended Diploma or 120 UCAS Tariff points from three A-levels or equivalent qualifications including an A-level grade B equivalent in Biology and GCSEs - English and Maths minimum grade C/4.

Main duties of the job

We have a number of opportunities for Apprentice Biomedical Scientists. This post would be ideal for school leavers or those who have left further education within the last few years who have the drive and ambition to work hard and further their education. Whilst completing a 4 year BSc Honours degree in Applied Biomedical Science by day release at Nottingham Trent University you will also be working and learning in one of the following Pathology Laboratories:-

  • Blood Sciences Automated Chemistry/Haematology
  • Microbiology
  • Cellular Pathology
