Job summary

We are looking for an experienced and motivated person to act as Radiotherapy Physics Lead for Imaging and Superficial within the department. The postholder will join the senior team and ensure that the most up to date techniques are in place to benefit patients.

The radiotherapy department is based at Leicester Royal Infirmary and is about to undergo significant investment with the introduction of a brand new Brachytherapy facility, two new TrueBeam linear accelerators and an upgrade to the ARIA Oncology management system to support remote planning and virtualisation. Equipment includes 4 Varian linear accelerators (currently 2 TrueBeam and 2 Clinac iX), Prosoma Virtual Simulation software, the Varian Eclipse treatment planning system, 2 wide bore CT scanners with 4DCT (Canon and GE), an XStrahl superficial unit and a Varian GammaMed brachytherapy unit

As a Medical Physics Expert, the postholder will be required to manage the legislative compliance related to radiotherapy imaging and to work closely with the radiation protection team, LRSS, within the Trust.

Main duties of the job

  • Lead the scientific development of radiotherapy imaging to ensure that the most up to date imaging techniques are available for patients undergoing radiotherapy treatment and brachytherapy.
  • Work with senior scientists across all areas of radiotherapy physics to develop departmental strategy and scope out research activity.
  • Line manage and direct the activity of other clinical scientists and staff, complete development work and report on service related data.
  • Take part in routine work related to the area of specialism
  • Act as MPE for imaging and superficial radiotherapy, which includes kV and electron radiotherapy. Ensure compliance with guidance and legislation in relation to these areas of specialism.

The Radiotherapy Department is a friendly, busy training department. It is housed in a purpose built Oncology Unit, which is centrally located with easy access to both road and rail connections. Leicester itself is a vibrant, friendly multicultural city with easy access to beautiful countryside.

We provide Oncology services to a catchment population of approximately 1 million within Leicestershire and Rutland and are ISO 9001:2015 certificated. We fully support staff development; the department has an impressive clinical trials portfolio and established links with Leicester University.
