Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated senior midwife to contribute to the development and implementation of key objectives across the Clinical Management Group (CMG) and the Trust to deliver high quality care.

Working in close partnership with the Director of Midwifery, Deputy Chief Nurses, Women's & Children's Senior Leadership Team and Leicester, Leicestershire, and Rutland (LLR) System Partners you will contribute to the development of our new UHL Maternity & Neonatal Improvement Programme (MNIP), play an active role within the Local Maternity & Neonatal System (LMNS), as well get involved in the delivery of the LLR Women's Health Strategy.

You will lead on the operational implementation of the maternity workforce and perinatal surveillance strategic vision both at UHL and within LLR LMNS. As a compassionate and collaborative leader, and supportive manager, you will influence and deliver change, empower and support career growth in your teams, and be committed to tackling health and care inequalities.

The successful candidate will be actively involved in operationally leading the service and will be an essential voice and role in ensuring the provision of a safe, effective, and evidence-based care service for our communities.

The Head of Midwifery will have responsibilities and accountabilities across Maternity, Neonates, and Gynaecology ensuring supportive and responsive nursing and midwifery management and leadership of our services.

Main duties of the job

As a Head of Midwifery you will be a clinically credible practitioner acting as an advocate and role model for personalised care and evidence-based midwifery in line with national agendas, utilising expert knowledge. This includes the development of innovative strategies to enable a strong and empowered workforce at all levels which is fit for purpose and equipped to deliver excellence in care.

The Head of Midwifery is key position within the Women's and Children's Clinical Management Group (CMG) and has a prime focus on the day-to-day operational delivery of high-quality standards of care across the inpatient and community service.

The post holder will work with CMG Quadrumvirate as one of two Heads of Midwifery to support the development and progression of the Maternity and Neonatal Improvement Programme (MNIP) to achieve consistency of practice, high standards of care and innovation.

As the Head of Midwifery you will demonstrate effective leadership skills, meeting challenging deadlines, and deliver on key performance targets including a significant focus on perinatal quality surveillance and workforce

A key role is to make certain a framework is in place to enable appropriate management of all midwifery and nursing staff to ensure they are clinically and professionally developed and actively encouraged and supported to be efficient, effective, engaged and highly motivated.

As one of two Heads of Midwifery together you will take responsibility for the leadership and line management of midwifery and nursing across Womens and Maternity within the Clinical Management Group (CMG).

The role:

  • Has responsibility for the delivery of safe and clinically effective maternity & nursing care across the CMG

  • Actively works to lead and empower midwives and nurses to develop and utilise their clinical leadership skills, enabling them to assume appropriate levels of authority to undertake their role effectively to support and develop the leadership within their wards and teams.
  • Takes leadership on MNIP & LMNS Workstreams to support the delivery of Trust, national and local professional priorities and objectives.

  • Develop, maintain, and provide assurance on clinical and operational governance systems and processes, specifically clinical risk management, CQC and Maternity Incentive Scheme (CNST) standards, clinical policy and procedure and clinical quality
  • Be accountable for the development and maintenance of robust systems and processes to monitor and report on incident management, patient experience outcomes, complaint management including resolution and the dissemination of learning to all members of the wider maternity team.
