Job summary

Come, join our team and train to become a Pharmacy Technician. The role is rapidly changing and they are vital members of today's healthcare team and contribute greatly in the supply of medicines to patients. You will be given the opportunity to develop your skills to your full potential whilst working towards acomplete a level 3 Pharmacy Technician apprenticeship andBTEC Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians.

Minimum entry requirements are 5 GCSE's at grade 4 or above or equivalent and must include Maths, English and Science (if you are awaiting results - please include predicted grades)

Main duties of the job

To develop the knowledge, skills and competencies of drug compounding, dispensing, storage, distribution and patient counselling, and to implement these in practice, meeting the requirements of current legislation, professional standards and ethics, pharmacy department performance targets, and achieving a QCF LEVEL 3 + BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Participate in dispensing and Final checking individual prescriptions for inpatients and outpatients, including clinical trials and controlled drugs, meeting legal and ethical requirements and department standards.
  • Develop knowledge and skills of patient counselling to meet required competencies for this activity by the end of the training period.
  • Participate in and develop the knowledge and skills of making special sterile and non-sterile products and made to order products for individual patients to achieve the required competencies for unsupervised dispensing by the end of the training period.
  • To coordinate discharge planning and implementation in conjunction with the clinical pharmacist and ward staff, through involvement with medical and nursing staff identifying patients for discharge, checking medicines against the TTO letter and dispensing, re-labelling as necessary.
  • To ensure that accurate drug histories are obtained for identified patients by communication with the patient/carer and/or by liaising with external organisations including GP practices, community pharmacies and nursing/residential homes.
  • Ensure personal working practices, behaviour and use of any equipment or facilities meet professional and Trust/department Risk Management and Health and Safety policy requirements to minimise harm to patients, colleagues or self, and damage to buildings or equipment.
  • Participate in the effective planning and organisation of dispensary work, making suggestions for improvement and identifying and completing tasks which contribute to the increased effectiveness of the service.
  • Maintain a clean and tidy work environment, ensuring items used or documentation are always stored in their correct place, requests are placed for items due to run out and no work is left unfinished. To participate in checking stock levels and expiry dates in the department.
  • Make all necessary records and complete all necessary documentation to ensure requirements are met and work progresses smoothly.
  • Participate in the processes for drug receipt, storage, distribution to wards, departments and outside hospitals, learning, understanding and meeting the legal requirements and professional and departmental standards for these.
  • Assemble cardiac arrest boxes and emergency drug kits as required.
  • To attend a designated college as defined during term time, ensuring all assignments are completed and submitted on time.
  • Complete a QCF portfolio by gathering evidence in the workplace ensuring all criteria and standards are met
  • Develop a working knowledge of pharmacy reference textbooks and other information sources and utilise these alongside practical skills to increase knowledge of information relevant to the job and its correct use, keeping a continuous record of achievements and evidence of skills appropriately applied within stated requirements of the training programme.
  • Develop and implement skills in effective verbal and written communication, making contributions to the team and supporting and helping other team members to achieve an increase in overall team performance and fewer work errors or duplication through poor communication.
  • Take part in Department and Hospital training initiatives necessary to develop required skills and for successful completion of the training programme.
  • Participate in the provision of extended hours cover including weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays on a rotational basis and Bank Holidays when required.
