The primary role of this Simulation Fellow is to lead organisation and delivery of our range of clinical simulation teaching within the Simulation suite of Robert Kilpatrick Clinical Sciences Building on our Leicester Royal Infirmary site. This large, high specification, simulation suite provides a very high quality environment to deliver a full range of high fidelity through to low fidelity simulation events for our undergraduate medical course. This exciting role is aimed at a training grade doctor looking to extend their skills in medical education, who already has developed an interest in simulation. This role would allow the successful appointee to gain further educational and leadership skills. Our simulation delivery is broad based and aims to help to develop students' skills in the clinical workplace - effective handover, patient safety, team work through to emergency management

Main duties of the job

The MB ChB course has two phases. Phase 1 (our essentially pre-clinical phase) and Phase 2 (our clinical phase). As UHL Clinical Fellow in Simulation you will provide and lead simulation delivery to groups of students in both phases of our curriculum and you will:

  • Co-lead delivery of our programme of simulations developed by our Simulation, Patient safety and Interprofessional learning teams
  • mainly be involved in teaching by:
  • Delivering simulations as a simulation tutor
  • Acting as a clinical teacher for Phase 1 (years 1-2) students in their early clinical training (CHDD course)
  • demonstration and practice of clinical examinations
  • opportunities to give lectures
  • Take a full share of all examining work, marking of written assessments and examination of students in OSCEs.
  • Respond to student learning needs such as extra tutorials and support as approved by School staff.
  • Work with our University Simulation Lead, our Patient Safety and IPL lead and our University clinical block leads in the development of our simulation curriculum and development of students on the course.
  • Enthuse, inspire and motivate students to keep a firm sight on their clinical goals by highlighting the importance, significance and relevance of emergency scenario management, clinical team working and patient safety in clinical medicine and practice

About us

The appointment is available to a Foundation Year 2 or equivalent training grade doctor who has completed Foundation training or a Locally Employed Doctor of similar with equivalent experience. You must have experience of working in the NHS.

You are expected to plan and organise your teaching duties independently including preparation, delivery and evaluation of teaching.

This post is offered on a Job share basis and your working days will need to be flexible and not fixed over a Monday - Friday working week. Your working days may vary from week to week and will be negotiated in advance with the other holders of the post and agreement of the UoL Lead for simulation to ensure to meet the need of service provision.

Normal working hours will be between 8 am and 5 pm on weekdays, although flexibility to work longer days, evenings or at weekends will sometimes be required.

You will schedule your pro rata annual leave at times appropriate to the needs of the Hospital UG education team and University, usually outside the main teaching terms.

If you are required to work clinical shifts as part of maintaining your portfolio for revalidation / appraisal purposes these shifts must be completed in addition to and not part of the working hours of this role and It is your responsibility to organise your clinical work.
