Job summary

Consultant Obstetric Physician

The East Midlands Maternal Medicine Network is looking for an Obstetric Physician to help develop and deliver networked maternal medicine care across the region.

University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust has recently been chosen as the lead Maternal Medicine Centre for the East Midlands. Its purpose is to ensure access to high quality co-ordinated pre-pregnancy, antenatal, intra-partum and postnatal care across the East Midlands for all women who have significant medical problems.

We are currently in the process of developing the necessary clinical, administrative, managerial, governance and educational structures to provide these services for the developing regional network. For clinical activity secretarial and administrative support will be provided by the Maternity secretarial staff on the relevant clinical site.

The successful candidate will:

Support the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Local Maternity Services and Integrated Care Services in the development and delivery of the Maternal Medicine Network

Work as part of the Maternal Medicine Centre Leadership Team to implement systems that support timely high quality specialist clinical input and care for women with significant medical problems before and during pregnancy

Work in partnership with the Midwifery leadership to ensure a coordinated multi-disciplinary Maternal Medicine Network

Main duties of the job

Work collaboratively with the lead obstetrician and lead midwife to provide joint leadership to the East Midlands Maternal Medicine Network and Maternal Medicine Centre

Model and lead on multi-disciplinary, multi-professional working across organisational boundaries

Develop a women centred service, where women are at the heart of and involved in decision making. Working with service users to evaluate the service.

Establish a model of care that delivers all aspects of care and treatment of women with medical problems before, during, and after their pregnancy

Work with specialties across the region to agree care pathways, standards of care, evidence-based guidance, and MDTs

Develop a system for high quality specialist advice to urgent clinical queries for pregnant women with acute medical illness or decompensation of chronic conditions

Work nationally and across specialties and disciplines to develop targeted education for all members of the health care team who look after pregnant women

Further develop obstetric medicine as a specialty and special skill across the region

Contribute to the development and implementation of Audit systems that measure and report quality and clinical outcomes to support learning and

improvement of the clinical care delivered across the East Midlands Maternal Medicine Network

Encourage and promote research in maternal medicine.

The job plan will be subject to annual review, with any revisions sought by mutual agreement but it is expected that the successful candidate will work with the Network and CMG management team to ensure that services are delivered efficiently and reflect best practice with processes and governance to match - this may require new and flexible ways of working in the future.

Supporting Professional Activity (SPA)

It is expected that most Consultants within the Trust will have 2.5 PAs for Supporting Professional Activities (SPA).

1.5 PAs are allocated as a minimum to all consultants for SPA in order to support the requirements of revalidation which include activities such as participating in audit, CPD and mandatory training.

Up to a further 1 PA will be available for SPA by mutual agreement as part of the job planning process for further appropriate verifiable SPA.

Workload is hard to predict but will be managed to ensure it is consistent with the allocated timetabled commitments. The intention is to build the service and increase the number of posts across the region over time. There is no on call commitment and activities fulfilled flexibly outside timetabled commitments (eg. MDTs, Teaching) will be recognised by Time off in Lieu or annualisation of hours.

  • MB BS or Equivalent . Full GMC Registration . Fully Accredited for Higher Specialist Training or will be eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months of the interview date. . MRCP/MRCS or Equivalent . Current BLS Certification
