Consultant Immunologist and Allergist
Applications are invited for a Consultant Immunologist and Allergist to join our dedicated, enthusiastic and ambitious team committed to delivering high quality clinical and laboratory services both locally and regionally.
The Clinical Immunology and Allergy department in Leicester provides a specialist Immunology laboratory, adult and paediatric immunodeficiency services, and delivers adult allergy services in conjunction with the Adult Allergy department. The service is accredited to IQAS standards and is currently undergoing QPIDS accreditation (virtual assessment completed, awaiting site visit and final documentation).
The clinical team consists of 3 medical Consultant Immunologists (including this post), a Paediatrician with an interest in immunology, 2 Specialist Registrars, 4 Specialist Immunology and Allergy Nurses, a Band 3 HCA and a Specialist Dietician. We work collaboratively with 2 Consultant Allergists from the Adult Allergy department. We are supported by 3 medical secretaries (2.0 WTE) and a dedicated clinic co-ordinator.
The Immunology laboratory is fully accredited by UKAS and is co-located with clinical offices within a fully integrated Department on the Leicester Royal Infirmary site. The laboratory offers a comprehensive range of immunology assays both locally and regionally for immunodeficiency, autoimmunity, allergy and haematological malignancies.

Job responsibilities
The overriding purpose is to support the provision of highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement by:
- Sharing responsibility with current consultants for both laboratory and clinical immunology services in Leicester
- Sharing in laboratory reporting and liaison with service users (in association with medical and clinical scientist colleagues) re interpretation of diagnostic results and planning appropriate immunological investigation of patients
- Participation in out-patient clinics in adult immunology / immunodeficiency, including supervision of nurse led SCIG / IVIG clinics
- Participation in adult allergy outpatient clinics, challenge and immunotherapy clinics (working with medical and nursing colleagues in the RRCV CMG)
- Participation in multidisciplinary team meetings
- Participation in teaching and training of junior staff (including supervision, training, assessment and appraisal of specialist registrars, clinical scientists, and trainee healthcare scientists). The appointee will also have supervision responsibilities for junior medical staff within the specialty. If appropriate the post-holder will be named in the contract of junior staff as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as an initial source of advice to such doctors regarding their careers
- Participation in the service working towards and maintaining accreditation as a Primary Immunodeficiency Centre under the QPIDS accreditation scheme and as an Allergy Centre under IQAS accreditation scheme.
- Participation in the provision of a reliable, high quality Immunology laboratory service in order to provide routine and specialist services to nationally accepted standards (UKAS).
- Participation in the provision of a high quality Clinical Immunology and Allergy service in UHL by working with colleagues in the Trent Immunology and Allergy Consortium (TRIAC) network to common standards of care.
- Evaluation and implementation of recent developments and guidelines in the specialty to ensure that the department provides an up-to-date service and good practice
- Participation in service development and business planning in collaboration with the other Consultants in the department, the CMG and local GPs and commissioners within the local CCGs;
- Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally;
- In line with GMC Good Medical Practice, it is the responsibility of the post-holder to ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality initiatives within the area of work
- Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences
- The post-holder is expected to respond in a timely fashion to legitimate requests from Trust officers this might include investigations of incidents or
- The post-holder will be expected to undertake the Trust Corporate and Directorate specific Induction and competency Programmes appropriate to
- The post-holder will be required to maintain their continuing professional development (CPD) to be able to successfully revalidate.
