Job summary

Applications are invited for whole-time or part-time consultant in Pain Management. (Anaesthetic sessions may be available for suitable candidates)

We are seeking a highly trained individual for to join the specialised Pain Service which invites referrals from the wider geographical area.

Our specialist services within pain medicine include Paediatric Chronic Pain, Facial pain clinics, Pelvic pain clinics, combined clinics with Drug deaddiction Specialist, Sessions in LOROS for complex cancer pain and a successful Pain Management Programme. We liaise strongly with Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and the Clinical Programme Innovation Group (CPIG) to deliver the needs of our Primary care. An opportunity is also available to include Anaesthetic sessions for dual trained individuals

Most interventional treatments are offered, including pioneering work in ultrasound guided procedures, fluoroscopy guided procedures, and Botulinum Toxin therapy for Chronic Migraine headaches.

The work pattern offered is designed to give the appointee the best opportunity to develop their clinical and non-clinical interests whilst most effectively supporting the department. It is anticipated the holder of this post will progress to a substantive position, having developed expertise and leadership skills in their field of interest.

UHL is fully committed to continuing medical education for consultants.

Main duties of the job

To provide Locum Consultant cover for the Pain Management service within the UHL.

Deliver a high quality service, supporting the department with a positive attitude towards flexible working.

Supervise and train junior Pain medicine fellows and other medical staff from a range of specialties rotating through the service.

Work with the acute pain team to provide safe and effective postoperative analgesia to patients.

Take part in multidisciplinary case conferences.

Teaching Post-graduate and under-graduate, research and administration.

Work with the Clinical Governance team to enhance patient safety.

To work flexibly to help cover the workload of the CMG.

Support the development of the Pain service given it is one of the tertiary teaching hospitals within the region

This is a locum post based within the Clinical Management Group of Intensive care, Theatres, Anaesthesia, Pain Management and Sleep (ITAPS). The post is for a period of 12 months, starting as soon as practically possible.

The post offer the opportunity to work in the UHL specialised Pain service:

This role incorporates outpatient clinics, interventional treatments, MDT specialised clinics, acute pain, complex cancer pain and Pain management programme.

Key Tasks

To provide Consultant cover for the Pain Management service within the UHL.

Support the development of the Pain service given it is one of the tertiary teaching hospitals within the region.

Deliver a high quality service, supporting the department with a positive attitude towards flexible working.

Service Delivery & Development

To participate in service development and business planning in collaboration with the other Consultants in the department, the CMG and local GPs and commissioners within the local CCGs;

Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff including the observance of local employment and human resource policies and procedures;

Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally;

In line with GMC Good Medical Practice it is the responsibility of the post-holder to ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality initiatives within the area of work.

The post-holder is expected to respond in a timely fashion to legitimate requests from Trust officers this might include investigations of incidents or complaints.

The post-holder is expected to participate in teaching and training of junior staff and other clinical staff groups. The appointee will also have supervision responsibilities for junior medical staff within the specialty. If appropriate the post-holder will be named in the contract of junior staff as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as an initial source of advice to such doctors regarding their careers.

The post-holder is expected to participate in professional continuing medical education; study leave is provided for this purpose.

Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences;

The post-holder will be expected to undertake the Trust Corporate and Directorate specific Induction and competency program's appropriate to role.

Governance

Participating in medical audit, the Trusts Clinical Governance processes and in CPD CPD is provided in job plans and attendance at audit and other governance meetings is mandatory;
