Job summary

The Radiotherapy department of University Hospitals Leicester is excited to offer the opportunity for a pre-treatment radiographer to join our team.

The department is the host for the East Midlands radiotherapy network and has excellent transport links around the region and with the rest of the country. Being based at the Royal Infirmary site you will be within walking distance of the vibrant and historical city centre of Leicester.

Equipment includes 2 Varian Clinac iX linear accelerators with OBI, respiratory gating and RapidArc, 2 Varian TrueBeam linacs, ARIA Oncology management system, Prosoma Virtual Simulation, Varian Eclipse treatment planning system, 1 Canon and 1 GE wide bore CT scanners with 4DCT, XStrahl superficial unit and Varian GammaMed brachytherapy unit. A replacement programme to include 2 more Varian TrueBeam linacs is underway as well as the construction of a new brachytherapy suite.

We offer a wide range of modern treatments and techniques including deep inspiration breath hold for breast patients and SABR for both primary lung and oligometastatic disease.

This is an excellent opportunity to utilise your clinical and leadership skills for the benefit of the LLR patient population and for those patients from further afield.

Main duties of the job

  • To be an expert within pre-treatment having specialist knowledge and experience.
  • To support the development of the Radiotherapy service by providing clinical expertise and leadership to implement evidence based practice.
  • To lead on the development of the team and individual team members through competency based training.
  • To lead on research in own area of specialism and encourage others to engage with research activities.
  • Use specialist knowledge to make judgments on how to achieve the best treatment for patients from a range of options.
  • In collaboration with Clinical Oncologists discuss complex cases to ensure patients receive the best care.
  • To ensure that consistently high standards of customer service are delivered at all times.

Job responsibilities

  • To ensure the safe use of highly complex treatment machines which cost in excess of £2 million.

  • Identify the potential to improve the efficiency of the service.

  • Identify the impact of changes in treatment technique/protocols that may have on the activity of the service.

  • Investigate other sources of income to fund research and development within the service.

  • Along with the other Band 7 Therapeutic Radiographers to line manage the Band 5 & 6 radiographers ensuring that all aspects of performance, attendance, training and appraisal are addressed in accordance with Trust policy.

  • Provides specialist training and ensures completion of the competency matrix.

  • Responsible for assessing the competency of other staff members and managing staff who have not reached the required competency level.

  • To assess and mentor students.

  • To take part in the recruitment process and subsequent induction of staff.

  • To comply with all Trust policies and procedures.

  • Propose changes to procedures and policies within the department/area of specialism.

  • To actively engage with the Quality Management System.

  • Collaborate with departments/areas outside of Radiotherapy to implement changes to procedures and policies.
