CONSULTANT IN PAEDIATRIC NEUROLOGY

This is a full-time Consultant in Paediatric and Adolescent Neurology with responsibility in Paediatric and Adolescent Neurology Services for University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. This post is based on a 10 PA job plan and is a replacement post.

Main duties of the job

MAIN DUTIES

  • To provide general paediatric neurology outpatient and inpatient services in Leicester and outreach outpatient services in the local community and surrounding District General Hospitals.
  • To continue and enhance current network collaboration with regional tertiary neurology, neuroradiology and neurosurgery partners
  • To continue collaborative work with other specialists locally in adult neurology, neurophysiology, paediatric oncology, endocrinology, neonatology, genetics, clinical chemistry, general paediatrics and other specialties as necessary.
  • To assist colleagues with the functioning of the service by undertaking administrative duties associated with the running of the clinical department and to be involved in the development of clinical protocols in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team.
  • To participate and instigate audit activities relevant to both general paediatric neurology and the appointee's special neurology interests.
  • Provide out of hours specialist paediatric neurology advice

Leicester Children's Hospital provides paediatric services to the just over one million residents of Leicestershire and Rutland. Tertiary services the Leicester Children's Hospital also attracts patients from further afield. All the general and specialist services are centralised on the Leicester Royal Infirmary site. The Leicester Children's Hospital currently manages around 130 beds and has a budget of over £35 Million. The Children's Hospital team includes more than 50 consultants and sees 13 000 new out-patients annually. The Children's Hospital manages 3000 day case patients and 12 000 emergency patients annually. The Children's Hospital forms part of UHL's Women and Children's Clinical Management Group (CMG).

The Leicester Paediatric and Adolescent Neurology service is based in the Leicester Childrens Hospital on the Leicester Royal Infirmary site.

The appointees will form part of a team of 3 consultant Paediatric Neurologists and a multi-disciplinary team. This includes requests for advice and consultation from the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre and ECMO Centre at Glenfield Hospital and the Regional Neonatal Unit at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. Moreover the service is looking to expand beyond 3 consultants in line with national guidance and to allow out of hours advice.

The neurology service provides tertiary level care for patients from Leicester, Rutland and surrounding counties. There are well-established links with local community paediatric services and with paediatric colleagues in Coventry and Warwickshire. There are monthly ketogenic diet clinics and monthly joint neuromuscular MDT clinics with the community paediatric team. The neurology service is supported by a neurophysiology department where there are facilities to carry out ambulatory EEG, Video-EEG, EMG and nerve conduction studies. There is also a video telemetry facility.

The service is recognised for National Grid Training in Paediatric Neurology. There is a well-established paediatric neurology grand round in which invited speakers from around the country have participated. Dr Hussains special interest is in neuromuscular diseases and complex epilepsy. The new post holder will be encouraged to develop his/her own interests. The neuro-surgical services are based at the Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham.

Essential

  • MB BS or Equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
  • MRCPCH or Equivalent
  • Eligible to be included on the Specialist Register, or within 6 months of achieving CCT in paediatric neurology at the time of interview
  • APLS
  • Child Protection Level 3

  • Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations.
  • Higher degree eg MSc, MD or equivalent.
