Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Sport & Exercise Medicine, based in the Department of Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) at Leicester General Hospital. This is a less than full-time post for 3-4 days per week (0.75 wte).Leicester has a high reputation for the provision of sports medicine and surgery. The successful candidate will become a key member of an established multi-disciplinary team, including six Consultants, extended scope physiotherapists, specialty doctors, clinical nurse specialists and a podiatrist. The main responsibility will be provision of secondary care SEM services to our local population across sites in Leicestershire and at the National Centre for Sport & Exercise Medicine based at Loughborough University. The East Midlands offers unique opportunities for developing a full-time career in Sport & Exercise Medicine.The post is permanent and would be suitable for individuals on the Specialist register in SEM or within a 6 month period of obtaining a CCT in SEM. Applicants must have MRCP, MRCGP, or equivalent, and be members of the Faculty of Sport & Exercise Medicine (UK). A comprehensive clinical experience of sport and exercise and musculoskeletal medicine is expected. A long term commitment to NHS SEM services in the Leicester is anticipated.
Main duties of the job
The main duties will be the provision of secondary care Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) services to the people of Leicestershire including a significant number of tertiary referrals. The post is suitable for individuals with comprehensive clinical experience of sport and exercise and musculoskeletal medicine. They will be on the specialist register in SEM or within 6 month of a CCT in SEM.
A keen and active role in audit, teaching and research is anticipated. The post will include supervision of undergraduates and SEM trainees on the East Midlands rotation. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the on-going development of SEM in Leicester.
About us
The Department of Sports Medicine was established at Leicester General Hospital in 1993. Since that time it has been key provider of musculoskeletal care locally and has played an important role in the development of the sports medicine on national basis. Sport and Exercise Medicine is now a recognised, defined medical specialty with its own training programme. The SEM department has evolved over recent years to meet the challenges of the healthcare economy and the needs of the specialty. This post has been developed to help take forward the Trust's vision for SEM within the NHS. It will allow the Trust to deliver enhanced SEM activity levels, whilst accommodating changes to Consultant job plans and to improve the service offered to patients in the county.
The Sport and Exercise Medicine service is based at Leicester General Hospital within its own distinct area which also hosts the Orthopaedic local anaesthetic services. The established multi-disciplinary team is currently lead by five Consultants: four Consultants in SEM and an Orthopaedic Sports Injuries Surgeon, soon to be joined by a further sports injuries surgeon In addition, clinical care is provided by three extended scope physiotherapists, two clinical nurse specialists, two GP speciality doctors in SEM and a podiatrist.
