Job summary

CONSULTANT UROLOGIST with a specialist interest in robotic uro-oncology

The appointment will be whole time. Any Consultant who is unable for personal reasons, to work whole time, will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with Consultant colleagues. The successful candidate will have access to a named secretary to support their administrative needs and will have office space within the main Urology Department.

Applications are invited for this post in the department of Urology based at the Leicester General Hospital. We are looking for the right candidate to join our high-profile team at an exciting time.

The service currently provides all urological activity for Leicestershire, offering all sub-specialties. We are a tertiary referral centre for cancer, andrology, stones and female urology. We have our own on-site lithotripter. We are just embarking upon our 5-year development plan for Urology which includes the building of a consultant-led Urology Planned Treatment Centre offering one stop outpatient Urology.

We continue to expand our robotic surgery programme for major cancer, and work in partnership with other Trusts providing cancer services for Northamptonshire, Lincolnshire and more widely in some sub-specialist areas.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for the management of outpatient, day surgery and in-patients
  • To lead ward rounds, outpatients and theatre activity
  • Perform urological surgery including general urology and female and reconstructive surgery
  • Outpatient review of patients and assessment of new referrals to the department
  • To undertake diagnostic testing
  • To take part on the one-in-thirteen consultant on- call rota
  • To participate in a management role at an appropriate point
  • To contribute to the strategic planning and service development of the Urology department

About us

This post is for a Consultant Urologist with an interest in robotic uro-oncology to join the team as part of our succession planning and investment programme. Our Urology department continues to develop and expand its complex cancer services, with robotic surgery now well established.

UHL has invested significantly in the Urology Department and it is a leading Tertiary centre providing major urological cancer services to patients from Lincoln, Northampton and Kettering and provides for much larger populations across the East Midlands and the Arden network for Penis, Testis and kidney cancer. Our tertiary cancer network for prostate, bladder and complex kidney surgery is approximately 2.8 million, with wider referral bases for RPLND, IVC thrombectomy, and penile cancer.

Leicester is also a major centre for complex colorectal resections, many of which require urological involvement.

As well as our complex cancer services we deliver specialist female and Reconstructive Urology for both simple and complex incontinence and fistula and urethral diverticular referrals We specialize in Andrology including implant services, collaborate with uro-gynaecology to deliver complex surgery for female pelvic floor dysfunction and mesh removal. Our on-site lithotripter is a valuable treatment aid for both elective and emergency stone cases.

  • To provide Consultant Urology services at the University Hospitals of Leicester, with a focus on robotic uro-oncology.
  • We would particularly like the new appointee to contribute to the robotic partial nephrectomy programme, and existing skills in this procedure would be an advantage.
  • We have a well-established high volume robotic prostatectomy programme, and robotic cystectomy with intracorporeal diversion has also been established. If the successful appointee has interests in either of these areas, there is scope to accommodate this.
  • There are a number of experienced robotic surgeons in the department and the new appointee will be well supported with mentorship and joint operating available to develop skills. We would like to support the new appointee to become a major contributor to our robotic programme.
  • To ensure the provision of good standards of practice and care, as prescribed in GMC Guidance Duties of a Doctor, at all times; and ensuring that bad practice is reported, as appropriate.
  • To ensure that clinical practice is both effective and efficient and that appropriate monitoring of clinical care takes place.
  • To co-operate in ensuring that services deliver national targets and the local agenda and that the contract is achieved within budget.
  • The Consultant has a continuing responsibility for the care of the patients in their charge and for the proper organisation and functioning of their clinical practice. To achieve this, the post holder will liaise closely with other specialties, departments and outside agencies in contributing to the objectives of the department, CMG & Trust.
  • To take responsibility for ensuring that critical clinical incidents, as defined in the Trusts Critical Incident Policy, are reported either to the Head of Service or Clinical Director or the Medical Director in a timely manner.
