Consultant Congenital Cardiac Surgeon
(Locum Position also considered)
Applications are invited for a full time Consultant Congenital Cardiac Surgeon to join our team at the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre (EMCHC). The post is based at Leicester Royal Infirmary for paediatric cardiac surgery and Glenfield Hospital for the adult congenital heart disease service. The post holder will join a team of two other Congenital Cardiac Surgeons and a team of 3 surgical fellows, working alongside an extensive team of paediatric and adult colleagues, the successful candidate will help contribute to the life-time care model for congenital heart disease patients that EMCHC prides itself on.
It's an exciting time to join the EMCHC team as the paediatric service has recently moved into a brand new congenital heart center at the Leicester Royal Infirmary site with a new hybrid catheter lab and paediatric cardiac theatre, and is now co-located with Leicester's other paediatric services. The adult congenital service will remain at the well established successful cardiothoracic center at Glenfield Hospital.

Main duties of the job
- To achieve the minimum standard of 125 surgical cases per surgeon as set out in the NHSE service specifications
- To participate in the paediatric cardiothoracic and ECMO on call rotas at a frequency of 1 in 4.
- To help ensure stability of service delivery for both surgery and ECMO
- To participate in and instigate audit activities within the directorate relevant to congenital cardiac surgery, or ECMO.
- To sustain and develop teaching and research in conjunction with the University of Leicester, and to participate in and fulfil the requirements of the Royal College of Surgeons CPD scheme.
- To participate in and continue to develop services for children with congenital heart disease in the East Midlands, working with existing team of paediatric and adult congenital cardiologists, surgeons, intensivists and Anesthetists.
- Work closely with our partners at network centers team to ensure communication is timely and efficient.
- Supervise and train junior medical staff in all aspects of congenital surgery.
- Work to help deliver the NHSE Congenital Heart Disease Standards & Specifications.
- Participate in the Congenital Heart Disease Network events and teaching.
- To encourage a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of patients.
- Teaching, research and administration.
- Take part in multidisciplinary case conferences.
- To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit

You will be required to collaborate with colleagues from paediatric and adult congenital cardiology, cardiac surgery and paediatric intensive care to form a single seamless service has resulted in a safe, productive and happy working environment to the benefit of our patients. A full range of services are provided with the exception of transplantation. Cardiological services are delivered by 14 consultant cardiologists and include a full range of interventional procedures including PPVI, TAVI, device closure of septal defects, PDAs and collaterals. There is a well-developed electrophysiological, fetal and adult congenital service. Intensive Care is provided for children in a dedicated PICU which also accommodates paediatric ECMO patients. There are 13 consultant paediatric intensivists, who also support the COMET transport service and ECMO service provision. The Congenital Heart Service in Leicester has grown markedly over the last several years with major expansion in both medical and surgical activity. The service aims to achieve a target of 418 congenital cardiac surgeries per year and 200 interventional procedures, with the aim of looking to develop up towards 500 surgical procedures in the future.
