Consultant in Pain Medicine and Anaesthesia
Based at the Leicester General Hospital Site
Applications are invited for whole-time or part-time consultant in Anaesthesia with an interest in Chronic Paediatric Pain.
We are seeking a highly trained individual for one substantive replacement post to join the specialised pain service which invites referrals from the wider geographical area.
Our specialist services within pain medicine include Paediatric Chronic Pain, Facial pain clinics, Pelvic pain clinics, combined clinics with Drug deaddiction Specialist, Sessions in LOROS for complex cancer pain and a successful Pain Management Programme. We liaise strongly with Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and the Clinical Programme Innovation Group (CPIG) to deliver the needs of our Primary care. Most interventional treatments are offered, including pioneering work in ultrasound guided procedures, fluoroscopy guided procedures, and Botulinum Toxin therapy for Chronic Migrainous headaches. We have 3 fulltime clinical nurse specialists working in chronic pain who provide Acupuncture and TENS service, outpatient Qutenza treatments and a follow-up telephone review service. We have an extended scope physiotherapist and clinical psychology support.
Main duties of the job
- Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.
- To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of patients
- To promote new ways of working and co-ordinating care for patients in the community and to ensure that services are based on effective and integrated partnerships across the health community

About us
The Department of Anaesthesia at the Leicester General Hospital provides support to the following surgical specialities: , General and colorectal Surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology, HPB, Robotic surgeries as well as Obstetrics, Gynaecological surgery, Intensive Care (ICU), Pain management and Sleep services. Across the UHL the departments runs both Anaesthetic Review Clinics and a nationally-accredited Cardio-Pulmonary Testing Service and is actively supporting the development of the UHL Pre-operative Assessment Service.
The scope of surgical practice at the hospitals offers exciting and varied clinical opportunities for consultant anaesthetists and there is continued support for non-clinical professional activities both inside and outside the trust.
UHL is fully committed to continuing medical education for consultants. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to departmental quality improvement activity and the clinical supervision of postgraduate trainees in Anaesthesia. The UHL Department of Anaesthesia is committed to working towards the Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation scheme of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

- To participate fully in the provision of chronic pain services in UHL and the community across all age groups.
- Responsibility for the provision of a safe and efficient anaesthetic service for elective and emergency care at UHL including preoperative assessment and postoperative care.
- To provide specialist high-risk anaesthesia outpatient clinic work
- To participate in the Consultant Anaesthetist non-resident on-call rota and/or weekend resident rota.
- To support the Consultant-delivered Perioperative Medicine Service.
- To work flexibly to support the workload and cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised Flexibility within the role will be required especially over the next 5-10 years as a £450 million pound project is underway to reconfigure services across all Leicester hospitals.
- To participate in service development and business planning in collaboration with the other Consultants in the department, the CMG and local GPs and commissioners within the local CCGs.
- Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff including the observance of local employment and human resource policies and procedures
- To contribute to and/or support research. Formal research duties taken up after commencement in post may be assessed for additional SPA time.
- Participating in medical audit, the Trusts Clinical Governance processes and in CPD CPD is provided in job plans and attendance at audit and other governance meetings is mandatory; Managerial, including budgetary responsibilities where appropriate and compliance with standing orders and standing financial instructions of the Trust.
- In line with GMC Good Medical Practice it is the responsibility of the post-holder to ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality initiatives within the area of work.
- The post-holder is expected to participate in professional continuing medical education; study leave is provided for this purpose.
