Job summary
The post attracts 10 basic sessions with a 1 in 11 middle-grade on-call commitment and prospective cover for the other Specialty Doctors. The on-call frequency is 1:11. There is also a 2% on-call availability supplement.
The middle grade staff provide on-call cover on all Fridays to enable the specialist trainees to attend the regional teaching program at Leicester.
The Practitioner will be expected, in the normal run of his/her duties, and within his/her contract and job description, to cover for the occasional brief absence of colleagues as far as this is practicable, e.g unforeseen sickness.
Only 4 Middle Grade Doctors within Orthopaedics will be permitted leave at any one time.
Main duties of the job
The Specialty Doctor will be responsible for the management of elective and Day Cases including looking after in-patients. The commitments also involve clinics, theatres, ward work and looking after all critically ill patients.
Trauma hot weeks are shared by 2 consultant teams doing alternate days. This is in 6 weekly cycles. The specialty doctor attached to a consultant team will be expected to mirror the activities of the consultant. The specialty doctors do prospective cover for on call activities.
The main site of duty is Pilgrim Hospital; however, the doctor is expected to have peripheral commitments at any other site within ULHT. The doctor is also expected to travel once a week to Grantham along with consultant they are attached to for elective surgery. There is a separate on-call team at Grantham to look after the elective patients.
The Specialty Doctor will be expected to travel to other sites and support the Consultant in theatre, clinics, ward duties and deal with all the peri-operative care of the elective patients on the ward.
Dealing with all peri-operative problems of the Orthopaedic patients on the ward, escalating to medical / surgical / tertiary referrals as necessary. Providing comprehensive care on the ward is a core activity of the job in addition to supporting teams in theatre and on the ward.
