Job summary
This post is for a Speciality Doctor, to work on the Gastroenterology ward (Ward 8A) at Pilgrim Hospital in Boston, Lincolnshire.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to actively participate in the day to day running of the Unit, which accommodates 24 beds . This includes running a daily middle grade-led ward round with junior support and close liaison with the consultants. They would also be expected to carry out a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and supervise the junior doctors on the ward. The post holder will also play an active role in the assessment of new admissions to the unit and provide an in-reach service to the emergency department and MEAU. They need to ensure that administrative tasks are supervised and completed promptly. The Unit has a strong teaching and governance ethos and the postholder is expected to contribute to this and to design and execute projects relating to service evaluation and improvement. There will be an opportunity to take part in running TIA clinics and thrombolysis calls in liaison with stroke ACPs.
The duties of the post are subject to review from time to time in the light of changing requirements of the service.

Pilgrim Hospital is a modern 547 bedded District General Hospital pleasantly situated in Boston with good transport links. It provides a full range of hospital services to a catchment population of approximately 200,000, which increases to 250,000 during the summer due to the holiday influx to Skegness and related resorts. A full range of clinical specialties and laboratory facilities of the highest standard are provided. It has close links with community hospitals in Skegness and Spalding and is the main hospital centre for South Lincolnshire. The hospital includes an Emergency Department and beds for General Medicine, Elderly Care, General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Intensive Care with 12 beds, an Endoscopy Unit and a new MRI scanner.

The appointee will be expected to work flexibly and be responsible for day-to-day patient care partaking in board and ward rounds on the Gastroenterology inpatient ward at Boston, Ward 8A, as well as delivering gastroenterology medicine clinic sessions and reviewing of referrals from other specialties.
There is an option to partake in general medical on-calls if this aligns with the development of the successful applicant.
Ward 8A is a general medical/gastroenterology acute ward with 29 beds which Gastroenterology share with Endocrinology. The Gastroenterology Team also cover medical outliers on one of the surgical wards (5A) and the Oncology ward 7A. The team currently consists of:
5 x Gastroenterology Consultants (2 NHS Locums)
1 x Speciality Trainee Registrar (East Midlands - North Deanery)
2 x Speciality Doctor (Registrar Equivalent) both included in this advert

The current model of care has each consultant spending 2 weeks on the ward during which time all elective commitments are cancelled, allowing a daily consultant ward-round and immediately available senior cover during office hours. The remaining 6 weeks of the 8-week cycle are spent concentrating on elective services such as out-patients clinics and endoscopy lists.
