Job summary

United Lincolnshire Hospital Trust have vacancies for full-time Consultants in Intensive Care Medicine. This Consultant post will be based at Lincoln County Hospital. The duties include supporting the intensive care rota in line with the Intensive Care Society guidelines on the provision of Intensive Care service (GPICS).

Several of our current Intensive Care Consultants also undertake regular sessions in the anaesthesia service and the illustrative job plan includes anaesthesia sessions. For applicants whose other speciality interest is not anaesthesia, other areas of non-ICM speciality interest may also be supported and we would strongly encourage colleagues who wish to pursue other speciality interests to contact us to discuss that in more detail.

Main duties of the job

Lincoln County Intensive Care Unit is a mixed level 3 / level 2 facility providing comprehensive critical care to all adult patients for all specialties provided by the hospital The unit typically admits around 1000 critical care patients/ year with a 50/50 level 2 level 3 case mix and around 70 % of the cases being emergency admissions. ICNARC CMP and QSIS dashboard data shows the ICU consistently delivers outcomes and quality of acre at or above expected levels and the service has been very well evaluated by the CQC being ranked as either good or outstanding in all 5 QC domains.

The Critical Care Unit is staffed by the Department of Critical Care on a 10 consultant ICM rota, consultants have no other commitments when on call for ICU either within or out of hours. Anaesthesia services are provided by a completely separately staffed rota. Current working patterns are 2 consultants daytime on ICU (one 08.00-16.00 and one 08.00-21.30) with a single consultant providing non-resident OOH cover overnight.

Job responsibilities

Daytime DCC ICM working is equally divided between long 08.00-21.30 and short 08.00-16.00 days 7 days/ week. The unpredictable out of hours ICM Consultant Oncall rota is on a 1:10 weekday and weekend night basis and is job planned as annualised prospective cover. The on-call supplement is 3%.

This post is advertised as a 10 PA contract. Additional DCC PAs or SPAs are available by negotiation/ agreement for specific DCC activities or defined SPA roles such as educational roles including speciality tutor and educational supervisor, trust appraiser, clinical leadership and management roles including clinical governance lead, clinical lead for organ donation etc in accordance with the ULHT job planning guidance. Current consultants typically undertake 2 PAs/week on non ICM DCC and 2 PA SPA activity limited by a maximum averaged 48 hour working week.

The unit is fully staffed to GPICS recommended nurse staffing levels with 1 nurse per 1 level 3 bed and 1 nurse per 2 level 2 beds with supernumerary shift in charge and clinical nurse educator provision nursing complement. Daytime support is provided by 2 FFICM registered ACCPs and the unit plans to further develop its ACCP training and workforce. The unit also provides training for medical staff at all grades. OOH resident cover is provided by Anaesthesia / ICM ST trainees from the East Midlands school of Anaesthesia. The consultants provide 24/7 cover in a flexible rota with prospective OOH cover and have no other duties when on call for ICU . There is an excellent and well established 24/7 CCOT service with very close working links with ICU. The department also delivers post ICU follow-up clinics following discharge from Critical Care.

Essential

  • Eligible for entry/entered on the specialist register of the General Medical Council in ICM, Anaesthesia or another appropriate speciality
  • FFICM/FRCA or equivalent
  • CCT in ICM, Anaesthesia or appropriate speciality within 6 months of CCT at date of interview

  • MD/ PhD or Higher/academic qualification
