Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

Consultant in T&O - Limb Reconstruction and Bone Infection

Information:

This job is now closed

Job summary

The Trust wishes to appoint a substantive Orthopaedic Consultant to accommodate demand in the sub specialty of Trauma, Limb reconstruction and bone infections. At present 16 incumbent surgeons share the trauma on-call rota and it is expected that the new appointee will join this rota.

There are 3 fellowship trained limb reconstruction surgeons in the department. The successful candidate would join this team and will manage complex trauma, limb reconstruction and bone infections for the region.

The orthopaedic department supports 2 full day orthoplastic lists. The bone infection team consists of two orthopaedic surgeons, one plastic surgeon, 1 radiology consultant and infectious disease consultant, who along with the infection coordinator manages a weekly MDT and monthly infection clinic.

The Department provides services to the East Riding of Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and acts as a tertiary referral center for complex cases such as foot and ankle, spine, paediatrics, pelvic injuries and limb reconstruction and bone infections. Hull is an adult Major Trauma Centre within the Yorkshire Trauma Network.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate would join the general on call rota (1:16) which takes general orthopaedic on call including paediatrics but not spinal trauma. Spinal trauma is taken by neurosurgery.

They would have a regular trauma list at HRI and potentially a day case trauma list at the new day case unit at CHH.

The successful candidate would also become one of the major trauma consultants. This is a team of 12 consultants who manage patients on the major trauma ward, on a 1:12 basis, and staff the ward 0800-1800 Monday to Friday, conduct a daily ward round, and attend trauma calls.

This rota is intended to extend to provide cover at the weekend, likely with reduced hours. This rota does not have an on call element and overnight cover is provided by the 'base' specialty (Ortho, Gen Surgery, Neurosurgery)

It is anticipated that the successful candidate would be comfortable to manage the breadth of orthopaedic trauma but would have a special interest in complex trauma, circular frames, limb reconstructions and bone infections and would have undergone fellowship training in this area.
