Job summary

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our friendly and dedicated team of newborn hearing screeners based in the maternity unit at the Hull Women and Children's Hospital.

The Newborn Hearing Screening Programme (NHSP) aims to identify babies born with a hearing problem at an early age. Early help and support gives these babies the best chance to develop speech and language and also important social and emotional skills.

As part of the national programme the hearing screener would be joining a dedicated team of 8 hearing screeners and 1 administrative assistant offering a hearing screen to approximately 6,500 babies shortly after birth, in hospital or in local clinics across the Hull & East Yorkshire area.

This post will involve travelling between screening venues and so a driving licence and use of a car, or reasonable alternative means of transport, is essential. The successful applicant must be willing to work as part of a rota which includes weekends, bank holidays and monthly HEY Baby Carousel information evenings for parents-to-be.

Main duties of the job

Good communication skills and a confident and professional manner are essential for this role.

Applicants should be able to work effectively both within a team and alone and should have good organizational skills. Individuals will be required to perform the screen using specialized equipment, record, collect data and liaise with parents and professionals. Therefore, basic IT skills are essential.

Basic English and Mathematic qualifications (GCSE or equivalent) are required and some experience of working with babies and young children would be desirable. Previous experience involving NHSP is desirable, but not essential as training will be provided via the NHSP e-learning course, in-house training and external clinical assessment as part of the Level 3 Diploma in Health Screening. Applicants may be expected to attend the final part of their screener training at a venue outside of the local area.

The Screeners work across a seven-day rota, within a 4 week roster with 2 staff rotated to work a Saturday and or Sunday each week. They also provide service cover for all bank holidays except Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Applicants must be willing to support the delivery of monthly Carousel events providing essential information antenatally for parents-to-be. The Screener's current working day is 7am-3pm.

The current vacancy advertised is for 30 hours across 4 days per week.
