Job summary
This post is an exciting role that is designed to assist and support with the running of the Medical Examiner Service at Hull UniversityTeaching Hospitals NHS Trust .
The Medical Examiner Service provides closer scrutiny of all deaths and is being rolled out nationally; it will be statutory from April 2023.
You will work alongside the Medical Examiners Team at Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust to support with the delivery of the Medical Examiner Service across both sites and the implementation of community scrutiny.
Main duties of the job
The role will involve working closely with doctors, both the Medical Examiners in their role as independent scrutinisers, and also doctorsof all levels on the wards caring for patients. You will play an instrumental role in ensuring that deaths are appropriately recorded in a timelyfashion as well as communicating the recorded cause of death with relatives of the bereaved.
This role will incorporate administrative skills in ensuring necessary paperwork is accurate and complete, but also excellent communication skills during liaison with doctors, nurses, families, and were appropriate, the Coroners' services.
Medical Examiner Officers will undergo local induction and formal training appropriate to the role, including online training produced by the RoyalCollege of Pathologists
Applicants are encouraged from all backgrounds but it is desirable to have an understanding of the legal processes around death certification andan ability to talk to bereaved families in a sensitive and appropriate manner.
The role will involve interpretation of medical notes and close workingwith doctors of all grades so a clinical background with an understanding of medical terminology would be advantageous.
This role is hugely rewarding and will improve personal skills for the successful applicant. It is also a highly responsible and involved role and will require someone who is dedicated, driven and flexible with a genuine enthusiasm for this area of work and lifelonglearning.

HUTH provides specialist and tertiary services to a population of 1.25 million extending from Scarborough in North Yorkshire to Grimsby and Scunthorpe in North East and North Lincolnshire respectively.
