Job summary

Applicants are sought for a locum full time Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

The post would involve working at Hull Royal Infirmary (HRI) and Castle Hill Hospital (CHH), with potentially clinics at East Riding Community Hospital (ERCH) and theatre lists at Goole District Hospital (GDH)

The basic job plan would consist of 10Pas with the option to increase to 12 PAs

The successful applicant would take part in the general orthopaedic trauma rota on a 1 in 16 basis and the Major Trauma Rota on a 1 in 12 basis.

The post would consist of theatre lists at HRI and CHH both trauma and elective, day case and in patient as well as fracture clinic and major trauma ward round 1in 12 weeks

Main duties of the job

At present 16 incumbent surgeons share the trauma on-call rota and it is expected that the new appointee will join this rota..

The Department provides services to the East Riding of Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and acts as a tertiary referral center for complex cases such as foot and ankle, spine, paediatrics, non-unions and pelvic injuries.

Hull is an adult Major Trauma Centre within the Yorkshire Trauma Network.

The successful candidate would join the general on call rota (1:16) which takes general orthopaedic on call including paediatrics but not spinal trauma. Spinal trauma is taken by neurosurgery.

They would have a regular trauma list at HRI and potentially a day case trauma list at the new day case unit at CHH.

The successful candidate would also become one of the major trauma consultants.

This is a team of 12 consultants who manage patients on the major trauma ward, on a 1:12 basis, and staff the ward 0800-1800 Monday to Friday, conduct a daily ward round, and attend trauma calls.

This rota is intended to extend to provide cover at the weekend, likely with reduced hours.

This rota does not have an on call element and overnight cover is provided by the 'base' specialty (Ortho, Gen Surgery, Neurosurgery)

It is anticipated that the successful candidate would be comfortable to manage the breadth of orthopaedic trauma.

Some of these cases are tertiary referrals from neighboring NHS trust hospitals.
