Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Business Support Manager for HYMS at Hull Universities Teaching Hospitals Trust. We are looking to recruit an individual who wants to develop their management skills, is enthusiastic and hard working with good attention to detail. We are a large and busy education provider and want staff who are resilient, focused and who have a 'can do attitude'.

You will work closely with the Head of Undergraduate Medical Education, Student Liaison Officers and Clinical Staff to contribute to effective service development, operational management and delivery of high quality provision for students.

Student Support:

  • Manage day-to-day student support requirements and work with internal and external colleagues to facilitate support
  • Ensure provision and adaptation for students with complex needs and support complex student cases which may not be practicably managed by the Student Liaison Officers
  • Provide advice and guidance to students on a variety of potentially sensitive issues
  • Liaise between HYMS and HUTH to ensure diversity is recognised and supported

Main duties of the job

Planning:

  • Responsible for the planning, co-ordination and delivery of exams, including training
  • Responsible for the creation of student timetables for each phase working with the Associate Clinical Deans
  • Ensure students are provided with appropriate orientation and induction sessions in compliance with HUTH and HYMS policies and procedures
  • Represent the Trust at annual career events
  • Provide information and support to senior management colleagues as required
  • Working with the Clinical Dean and Head of Undergraduate Medical Education to ensure the compliance of Trust policies, procedures, codes of practice and regulations.

Manage Student Liaison Office (SLO)

  • Manage HYMS student liaison office (SLO) administrative staff including work allocation, recruitment, personal development reviews, absence reporting and performance management, adhering to HUTH policies and procedures
  • Plan and monitor the workload of the student liaison office team to ensure that all tasks are completed efficiently, and deadlines are met

Resource Management

  • Develop and maintain information systems for HYMS/HUTH
  • Carry out Health and Safety risk assessments and ensure staff training is current
  • Responsible for arranging student accommodation as required
  • Responsible for ensuring teaching equipment is available and suitable

Develop and manage projects as required:

  • Lead on projects to implement strategic initiatives identified by the Clinical Dean/Head of Undergraduate Medical Education

Hull York Medical School:

Hull York Medical School (HYMS) is a partnership between the Universities of Hull and York and the NHS in North and East Yorkshire, Northern Lincolnshire and Teesside. The first doctors to complete the HYMS MBBS programme graduated in 2008. With a distinctive and innovative approach to training doctors for the health services of the 21st century, HYMS aims to positively influence the recruitment and retention of doctors in the region and the quality of local health services.

Having launched a successful expansion bid HYMS offers a five-year programme using contemporary learning and assessment methods in an integrated structure to some 240 students each year. The programme features a modern learning environment and high quality clinical attachment opportunities. There is a strong focus on learning in community settings, including primary care, and working collaboratively with other health professionals.

In addition to the 5-year MBBS programme, Hull University Teaching Hospitals (HUTH) also hosts the clinical placement element of the PA Masters programme, which is now commencing its fifth year. The 2019 academic year saw the launch in Hull of the Gateway Year programme, designed to encourage a wider audience of applicants to medicine.

The Trust is an associated teaching hospital of the Hull York Medical School taking a very active part in the teaching of Medical Students undertaking the MBBS and Physician Associate MSc programmes.
