Job summary

We are looking for a 0.5WTE Consultant Psychiatrist to work as part of a job share in the Early Intervention in Psychosis Service in Worthing, West Sussex.

The Sussex EIPS service main area of work is the delivery of care and treatment to young people and adults experiencing a first episode of psychosis. Help will be offered to reduce service user's distress, maintain independence and integrity of care networks, shorten illness, prevent relapse, promote recovery and social inclusion, and minimise the impact of disabilities. Work with friends and family members is seen as an integral element to the way care is delivered.

In Sussex the EIPS service is made up of six teams all of which are managed through the Specialist services division. An EIPS Locality Leadership Team meets monthly to oversee the operation of the teams, and this group will be responsible along with team leaders in each team for ensuring there is a consistent approach taken wherever possible across teams.

Main duties of the job

The service provides specialist mental health assessments for a suspected first episode of psychosis. Assessment and formulation will lead to appropriate treatment and care plans, as well as appropriate risk management. An At Risk Mental State (ARMS) pathway is incorporated into this service.

The Consultant's role will be to work closely with the wider team to assess new patients referred to the service and provide a diagnosis and treatment plan, to monitor that treatment plan and ensure optimal treatment and minimal side effects. To work with the MDT to provide a holistic care plan. To liaise with inpatient and CRHT teams when clients are under these services and respond to wider trust needs as identified

The service provides a wide care package of evidence-based interventions to assist recovery and prevent relapse.The Sussex Early Intervention Teams had a total caseload of approximately 528 in 2024 with Hailsham caseload being around 85-95 in 2024 but with capacity to be increased further. The post holder will work in the Worthing Early Intervention Service team. They will work alongside the other Sussex Early Intervention consultants in the Hastings, Bognor, Brighton, Horsham and Hailsham teams.

The 14-18-year olds on the caseload will be medically managed by the locality CAMHS Consultants. The EIPS consultant will support the CAMHS medical input for those under 18 years of age as appropriate.

Service users/families are seen in a variety of settings as befits an EIPS model of care. In order to minimise travel, medical reviews will take place primarily in the clinic at the EIPS base. Occasionally reviews will take place at service users homes, in hospital or in other settings such as GP surgeries or 3rdsector facilities. There are Trust policies to govern safe working in non-clinic-based settings.
