Job summary
We are looking to recruit three experienced, knowledgeable and dynamic Senior Specialist Speech and Language Therapists to join the innovative Specialist Assessment Multidisciplinary (SAM) Team. SAM operates county wide and it is envisaged that each of our newly appointed SLTs will work locally within one of the mental health inpatient community rehab units in West Sussex, East Sussex, and Brighton, with some flexibility to work outside of these units where necessary.
This post will be to cover Crawley Road (Horsham) and Rutland Gardens (Hove)

SLT is a brand-new addition to the highly respected SAM team, which comprises occupational therapists, psychiatry, psychology, nursing and social workers. The SAM team's overall aim is to reduce the number of people with complex care needs placed in long term mental healthcare settings outside of Sussex: to ensure that the right people get the right care in the right place and time.
Main duties of the job
- Assessment of language, communication and/or eating and drinking needs of mental health patients open to SAM who are engaging in rehab
- Contribution to the MDT formulation aimed at increasing understanding of the person: both the potential for and the obstacles to recovery and
- Design of helpful communication/dysphagia strategies to support the person through this process
- Sharing of recommendations with wider professional teams: including within the units themselves and with the person and their family and/or carers
- Liaison with SLTs working in acute and forensic mental health services
- Development and implementation of outcome measures for SLT within the SAM team
- Embedding of communication awareness within the cultures of the community rehab teams: working alongside the wider MDT
- Training/consulting to other professional groups to increase understanding of communication and eating and drinking difficulties
- Innovation of clinical practice, drawing on the evidence base for SLT input into mental health recovery.
