Job summary

The Finance Specialist will be an integral member of the Financial Management team helping to provide a comprehensive financial service to the Trust. They will manage the day-to-day financial management processes and transactions, while supporting continuous improvement and data interrogation. They will support the Finance Manager and work closely with the whole Finance team and the applicable Operational Service teams to ensure the accuracy of month end processing.

The post holder will be supported to continue or start their ACCA/CIMA studies to achieve professionally qualified status.

Main duties of the job

  • Ensure accurate monthly reporting for an Operational or Corporate area. This will include journaling and transactions review, extensive data analysis and financial presentation.
  • Be responsible for the maintenance of key management information including; budgets and actuals within Expenditure, Income, and Headcount establishment.
  • Support with raising sales invoices and purchases orders as necessary.
  • Provide adhoc budgetary advice to budget holders and their support management.
  • Support the annual budget setting and monthly forecasting process.
  • Be responsible for leading and supporting the Finance Apprentice/Analyst, who will be providing management accounting support for the operational area.
  • Be an advocate of Continuous Improvement and work closely with the wider Finance team to help implement small to medium improvement projects.

Financial Control

  • Support the timely completion of Trusts monthly and annual accounts, in accordance with statutory and governance requirements. This includes supporting the Trusts statutory audit processes by providing information and answers to queries raised by the Trusts Internal and External Auditors.
  • Support the completion of all assigned financial adjustments for the relevant budget area, in an accurate and timely manner, including any necessary accruals, prepayments and budget transfers to ensure that financial management information is complete and accurate.
  • Ensure the information held on the finance system is accurate and maintain the quality of data held on the finance system through, for example, cost centre reconciliations, ensuring the correct coding of income and expenditure and allocation of budget to the appropriate financial codes.
  • Ensure establishment lists are in place for the relevant budget area, ensuring that these are accurate, reconcile to funded establishment budget and are kept up to date.
  • Ensure effective financial processes are in place to deliver effective budgetary controls and statutory financial duties including compliance with statutory requirements and delivering statutory returns.

  • Present highly complex and sensitive financial information to audiences of varying experience/ knowledge
  • To monitor, investigate and explain variances from budgets and/or Cost Improvement Programme targets in a timely manner, understanding the key drivers for the financial position, and provide advice on possible courses of action to achieve the budgeted position at the year end.
  • To provide analytical support (e.g. financial statistics, costing, analysis) to the Finance Manager and Budget Managers, to enable the production or review of scenarios, sensitivity analyses, cost improvement plans, bids for new business, business cases and service development propositions.

Financial Planning and Change

  • To support the budget setting process for the operational area to ensure the effective, efficient and economic use of financial resources in line with Trust priorities and longer-term strategic plans.
  • Assist Finance Manager/budget holders in planning and costing service developments, identifying and achieving targets and developing business cases.

General

  • To work flexibly and co-operatively with other finance colleagues to ensure the Finance service covers its entire responsibility and meets the needs of the Trust.
  • To fully participate in the Trusts performance review and personal development planning process on an annual basis.
  • To understand and comply with the requirements of the Trusts Standing Financial Instructions, financial procedures and other financial matters.
  • To identify opportunities for continuous improvement, suggest practical changes to deliver improvement and practice, and be open to change.
  • Undertake training as necessary in line with the development of the post and as agreed with the Director of Finance as part of the personal planning process.
