Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to provide medical leadership to our growing Neuropsychiatry Service, based in Haywards Heath. The service is commissioned by NHS England, to provide specialist neuropsychiatry and psychological input to people diagnosed with Non-epileptic Attack Disorder (NEAD), across Sussex. In this role, you will be working with practitioner psychologists, Registrars on psychotherapy placements, and trainees, to deliver assessment and treatment to people diagnosed with NEAD. Our focus is on person-centred, holistic care, ensuring people receive a responsive and high-quality treatment. This post is one example of the commitment of the Trust to develop better provision and capacity for local Neuropsychiatry Service. You will be a core part of the team developing the neuropsychiatry provision within Sussex, for people with neuropsychiatric conditions, as well as functional neurological disorders.

Main duties of the job

You will be part of our friendly and supportive Neuropsychiatry Team, which also includes psychologists (clinical, counselling and neuro), psychology trainees, Registrars and Team Administrators. You will provide senior medical input to the team, participate in local leadership meetings, and work with local operational leads on service development to improve quality in services, locally.

Neuropsychiatry is part of the wider Clinical Health Psychology (CHP) department and you will be joining the team at an exciting time of innovation and growth, as physical health services look to further integrate psychiatric/ psychological principles and practices into their care pathways. The CHP team includes psychologists, psychological therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, Speciality GPs, and trainees, and team members work into services for pain, cardiac and respiratory conditions, critical care, major trauma, diabetes, sexual health and neurology.

Job responsibilities

You will be part of the existing Neuropsychiatry team based at the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath, working 1PA for the service. You will undertake 2 clinics per month and there is the option to offer input flexibly, such as 1 day per fortnight or 2 days together, per month. The team provides a service during core working hours only (9.00am to 5.00pm).

You will provide input into the NEAD clinic. This would involve triaging referrals sent to the team (other team members also carry out this role and it is supported by the team administrator), assessment of accepted patients and providing treatment recommendations for them. Referrals are accepted for treatment for NEAD from Neurologists and GPs when a confirmed diagnosed has been provided. You will not be expected to carry an active caseload.

You will provide medical leadership in the development of the team and wider working age services, in line with the CDS and Trust goals, in order to provide high quality mental health care for patients. You will also provide senior clinical leadership and support to the team. Consultants are actively encouraged to take their study leave entitlement in line with Royal College Guidelines and to support the development needs identified in their PDP, Peer Group reviews and appraisal. There are locally occurring peer groups of Consultant Psychiatrists

Essential:

  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Excellent knowledge in specialty (such as, experience of working in a Neuropsychiatry service, or with Neuropsychiatry populations)
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months of appointment
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment

Desirable:

  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
  • MRCPsych
  • Additional clinical qualifications.
