Job summary

Would you like to be an advocate for families and help transform mental health and learning disability services for children and young people?

We're recruiting a Regional Family Ambassador to join our programme to support the transformation of children and young people's inpatient and intensive community mental health and learning disability services in the south of England.

You will lead and develop a team covering Kent, Sussex and Surrey who work alongside families and carers across the region to embed patient and public involvement at all levels of decision making.

We are seeking someone with significant experience of working alongside families in the health, social care or education sectors and of managing and developing a staff team.

You will be a passionate advocate for participation, an articulate and persuasive communicator and have experience of engaging and working with a wide range of people at all levels and from different organisations.

Lived experience of supporting a family member who has received mental health/learning disability services or who has required support/treatment across the health and/or social care and/or education system is desirable.

This role can be based anywhere within the region but extensive travel will be required. Flexible working and secondments will be considered.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work to the Programme Director to achieve the following core objectives of the Ambassador Role:

  • Provide oversight and input into regional policy and practice (co-production) related to the commissioning, delivery and assurance of Provider Collaboratives delivering CYP inpatient MH and LDA care
  • Liaise across the region to support local Family Ambassadors to engage with the units within their collaborative catchment
  • Supervises local ambassadors within the region, this will include offering supervision and / or debrief sessions after events or as part of supervision.
  • Gathers information related to quality and good practice within inpatient care, may receive escalations and concerns from the local ambassadors
  • Work at a strategic level to influence as a family/carer advisor within the system, ensuring the values of "Families Parents/Carers as Partners" is embedded at all levels of the CYP pathway.
  • Links with senior children's intervenors or equivalent roles including with the provider collaborative for those CYP where concerns are arising, to offer additional support.
  • Support the community of practice for all ambassadors
  • Work with the Programme Director to hold the system to account to deliver for families and parents.

This is an exciting new role, working at a strategic level, ensuring that the voices of parents/families are reflected in policy development and service design and that the needs and experiences of young people sit at the heart of decision-making.

This position sits within the Kent & Sussex and Surrey Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) Tier 4 Provider Collaboratives. NHS-led Provider Collaboratives are coalitions of local NHS trusts, independent health care providers and third sector organisations working together across a specific geographical area to improve the way specialised inpatient mental health, learning disability and autism services for people with complex needs are delivered in England.
