Job summary

We are looking for an experienced Counsellor/Psychologist to join an established IAPT service (Increasing Access to Psychological Therapies) working in community venues and providing a range of NICE compliant Step 3 High Intensity Psychological Interventions.

Health in Mind is an innovative and exciting service provided by Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. The service provides primary care level mental health & wellbeing interventions to people with common mental health problems across East Sussex. Each locality in the Service consists of a multi-disciplinary team with CBT Therapists, Primary Care Counsellors/Psychologists, Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners, Primary Care Mental Health Practitioners and Employment Advisors.

Main duties of the job

A key ethos of the service is to facilitate timely, convenient and non-stigmatic access to IAPT counselling and psychotherapy interventions ensuring that individuals benefit from a good quality and flexible service that meets their needs. In order to achieve this, your duties will include:

  • Providing therapeutic interventions to a range of clients with anxiety and depression related problems, including those who present with more complex issues.

In addition, expectations for a band 7 post would include:

  • Providing clinical supervision to counsellors and trainees,
  • Contributing to and taking responsibility for some local service systems and developments under the guidance of the local clinical lead,
  • Offering support and guidance to other counsellors regarding clinical work and service issues
  • Providing a counselling perspective on client presentation and referral pathway to other mental health practitioners in the local team.

Essential

  • A recognised professional qualification in Psychotherapy or Counselling or Counselling Psychology, (i.e. a minimum two year post-graduate (or equivalent) qualification comprising no less than 450 hours programme contact and including no less than 200 hours supervised counselling practice).
  • Accreditation with British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), or the HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist.
  • Qualified and accredited in delivery of a specialist psychological therapy (assessment, formulation and treatment), across a range of presenting problems maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse
  • Demonstrable competence in the delivery of a psychological therapy and a track record of delivering positive outcomes in this therapy
  • Experience of representing psychological therapy within the context of multi-disciplinary care and NHS settings
  • Knowledge of guidance and legislation in relation to the client group.
  • Knowledge of the theory, practice and evidence base of specialist psychological therapy as specified in the appendix, as applied to the client group using this service.
  • An ability to work drawing on the evidence base for effective interventions beyond a single model of therapy
  • Evidence of commitment to continuing professional development as required by the professional registration/accrediting body specified in the appendix
  • Experience of the application of psychological therapy in different cultural contexts and experience of working within a multicultural framework.
