Job summary

Band 4 (22,549 - £24,882 p.a.) in training(fixed term) and eligible to apply forBand 5 (£25,655 - £31,534 p.a.) posts when qualified.

We are looking for psychologically minded and highly motivated people to join our teams as Trainee Mental Health and Wellbeing Practitioners. You will have a degree (or equivalent) and have an understanding and experience of health care, social care, other public services, or voluntary sector services. We are looking for people with some understanding of severe and complex mental health difficulties. We welcome applicants with lived experience and/or experience of being a carer. This role will contribute to ensuring adults and older adults with severe mental health problems have greater access to psychologically informed interventions.

Main duties of the job

As a Trainee Mental Health and Wellbeing Practitioner you will:

  • attend all elements of the training programme of study and progress successfully through assessments of competence and attainment
  • Attend all supervision and relevant meetings required by the service and the university.
  • work in an adult community mental health service in Sussex when not completing the programme of study
  • support collaborative care planning, alongside other members of the multi-disciplinary team
  • work closely alongside a team of mental health professionals to deliver a set of brief wellbeing-focused psychologically informed interventions - not psychological therapy - for example:
  • Behavioural Activation and Graded Exposure
  • Problem-solving
  • Improving sleep
  • Recognising and managing emotions
  • Guided self-help for bulimia and binge-eating
  • Confidence building
  • Support with medicines management

You will be required to:

  • Have experience of work interacting with the public, working as part of a team, analysing complex information and communicating effectively
  • Demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain empathic, supportive relationships with people in significant distress, their families and carers

About us

This is an exciting brand-new role created Nationally by Health Education England (HEE) and NHS England and Improvement (NHS E/I) to support the transformation of adult community mental health services. Your training will be fully funded by the NHS, and you will be eligible to apply for a Mental Health Wellbeing Practitioner position once you pass the course.

As a Trainee Mental Health and Wellbeing Practitioner, you will be expected to work as part of a multi-disciplinary community mental health service. You will also be a part of your local Psychology and Psychological Therapies team, with supervision provided by them, and from the service, and the university. You will develop skills, and knowledge, and deliver psychologically informed interventions individually and in groups. You will work with adults and older adults, and their families and carers to receive the right care. You will need to have flexibility and adaptability and a passion for working with adults and older adults with severe mental health problems.

Successful candidates will be expected to undertake a blended model of learning (a mix of online and onsite) and be able to travel to the university base as required (travel expenses will be reimbursed). Whilst on placement you will need to be able to travel between sites, and be able conduct home visits when required.
