Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to recruit to a 3 day / 22.5 hours a week post (0.6WTE) for a Band 7 Clinical Psychologist to work as part of the Eastbourne, Downs and Weald Community Learning Disability Team. We are a forward thinking and innovative team, providing high quality support to individuals with learning disabilities. We have good working relationships with the local social care team and are co-located with them in our office in Uckfield. The role will be varied, but will have a focus upon supporting people with complex challenging behaviour, mental health needs or other issues related to both risk and vulnerability. The role will also be part of the wider team's goals to build service competency to meet the needs of adults with learning disabilities through training and consultation.

The role will play a fundamental part in the delivery of the service's care pathways working closely with families, support services, other health and social care professionals. The post holder will carry out assessment, interventions, monitoring and evaluation of outcomes. A range of theoretical models is supported to ensure we deliver on the Transforming Care agenda for the people with the most complex of support needs. We would particularly encourage applications from psychologists who have an interest in developing their skills in systemic working.

Main duties of the job

  • To work as a member of the community learning disability team.
  • To provide a qualified specialist psychology service to the clients of the learning disability team
  • To provide comprehensive assessments, individual and family interventions alongside other members of the learning disability team.
  • To provide consultation, supervision and advice, about psychological issues, to other members of the service
  • To participate in appropriate supervision and professional development.
  • To participate in clinical and social care governance framework within the learning disability service.
  • To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research.
  • To supervise assistant psychologists, and train other staff members in psychological approaches.
  • To provide specialist psychological assessments of clients referred to the learning disability team based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex psychological data from a variety of sources including psychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client's care.

Teaching Training and Supervision

To receive regular clinical and professional supervision from the senior psychologist and, where appropriate, other senior professional colleagues.

Management, Leadership, Recruitment, policy and service development

To participate as a clinician in identifying and implementing the development of a high quality, responsible and accessible service, in consultation with the team manager and supervisor.

Research and service evaluation

To participate in the evaluation, monitoring and development of the learning disability service operational policies, through the deployment of professional skills in research, service evaluation and audit and ensuring incorporation of psychological frameworks for understanding and provision of high quality care.

The service has a strong history of valuing and developing services for this client group.

We would actively encourage applications from final year trainees. We are keen to support newly qualified psychologists with their transition into their first post and additional support will be given, especially in light of the circumstances with the current pandemic. We have processes already in place for people to start with us prior to HCPC registration and we would work extremely hard to support people with any outstanding requirements of their training. We offer a lot of support and flexibility to individuals in relation to remote working and the wider C-19 landscape.

We will be open to considering remote working options for at least part of the hours.

  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in applied psychology (e.g. clinical / counselling psychology) (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996), including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology
  • Registration as a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist with the Health Professions Council.

Knowledge/Experience

Essential

  • Experience of specialist psychological working (assessment, formulation and treatment) with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity across the full range of care settings including outpatient, community, primary care, inpatient and residential care settings, maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
  • Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis as practiced within the field of clinical / counselling psychology.
