Job summary

We are looking to recruit a band 6 mental health nurse who is enthusiastic motivated /caring to, work within the Sexual Risk Theme of SWIFT. You will have a broad experience of working in mental health services have a specialist interest in Sexual Risk and working with victims /perpetrators of sexual abuse.

SWIFT encompasses specialist services in mental health, substance misuse, domestic abuse, learning disability and sexual risk. The multi-disciplinary staff team includes practitioners from Health and Social Care whose expertise in undertaking assessment and providing intervention within each of the specialist areas ensures a robust and integrated approach to supporting families within social care children services.

This post offers a Golden Hello, or a Relocation package up to a maximum of £2000. (pro rata applies and subject to terms and conditions. Please see attached Protocol document).

Main duties of the job

You will be required to complete mental health triages/assessments of people where there are concerns around sexual risk. It would be desirable to have experience in working within the field of sexual abuse, with adult perpetrators of sexual harm, young people with sexually harmful behaviour, non-abusing partners/carers and their children. However, full training in this area will be provided and therefore is not essential. An interest in working in the area of sexual risk is essential. You will have excellent skills in assessment, intervention and written and verbal communication. You will have experience in providing evidence-based reports/ and providing consultation and advice to other professionals. As part of this role you will be required to complete assessments for cases that are in proceedings and give evidence in court as an expert witness as required.

About us

SWIFT is a jointly commissioned service offer, provided between Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SPFT) and East Sussex County Council's (ESCC) Children's Service. The posts sit operationally within the service although employment and professional/clinical governance is through SPFT. The service's specification that governs assessment delivery is informed by the safeguarding threshold and the referral presentation of the parent or child. We work within the public law framework (PLO) and provide specialist assessment to court to inform child protection proceedings outcomes.

Job responsibilities

To assess parents where mental health/ sexual risk/domestic abuse/ substance misuse is a significant feature of family difficulties and identify the impact of these on children. To work alongside colleagues in SWIFT and Childrens Services in creating care plans/ safety plans/ risk assessments which address the impact of the above to families. To utilise a holistic range of interventions to improve parenting and reduce the risk identified and impact of the parental issues on dependent children thus improving the outcome for those clients and give consultations/advice to other professionals.

  • To undertake specialist service assessments according to the service quality standards.
  • To provide and contribute to assessments in safeguarding related matters, with particular reference to discerning the severity and risks of mental health and sexual risk and how this impacts upon both the individual, the family, parenting and the child / children.
  • To manage and maintain individual caseload as identified.
  • To assess and respond to identified risk. To provide a response to priority referrals. To reduce and manage risk in consultation with the SWIFT management team. To communicate information regarding identified risks to colleagues in other services.
  • To participate in the safeguarding process through attendance / contribution to core groups, case conferences and care proceedings including attendance at Court when required.
  • To apply professional nursing skills across the speciality.
  • To provide consultation and training to practitioners within Childrens Services and Adult Services on the impact of mental health / substance misuse / domestic abuse on parenting.
